saying goodbye to the old bitch

Recommended Posts

You are doing the right thing putting her down before she is really suffering. I see too many dogs which go down hill very fast, almost within days, and the owners hang on and hang on because they are too sentimental and selfish to let the dog go before that happens. I really hope that there is someone to do the same for me when my time comes.

this is Blackie a 1st x collie greyhound bitch, she is 16 now but really showing her age now,we did have her in the stables ,where she slept in a wooden shed along with 8 hens, but the shed was set on f

If her standard of life is quickly goin down hill then its the kindest thing to do,bring her for 1 last walk and do the desent thing for her.

My mate had her at a vet yesterday and she said ,she is not in pain or anything but her eyesight is going and she is losing all her muscle mass, she reckoned shehas a while left but when i seen her to

she's had a good innings 330 and plenty graft by the sounds of it atb

Thanks everyone, she will be brought up to my house tomorrow a bit of a walk around the fields she was walked in for years, and then she will walk the green mile, with a trip to the vet

s.e.s.k.u if you could see her feet ,she has not got one toe that wasn't broke at some stage

this is Blackie a 1st x collie greyhound bitch, she is 16 now but really showing her age now,we did have her in the stables ,where she slept in a wooden shed along with 8 hens, but the shed was set on fire during the week by some little scumbags but thankfully they let the bitch and the hens out first.

She is the dam to my 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie dog ,we had 3 other pups from the litter that stead around us,i had another bitch that had to be pts around 3 or 4 years ago,a dog a friend had to be pts a few months back ,both due to cancer and another bitch hit a bale of silage while coursing a hare a few years back and died straight out,so my 10 year old dog is the only pup we have from her,she is down with a friend of mine now and sadly it looks like we have to bight the bullet and have her pts,it is an awful pity we did not breed from her again and have some younger offspring from her because all the pups we kept from her came good ,so thanks for the 12 or more years of work we got out of you bitch and the pups you gave us,sad to see her going so bad but it will be kinder to have her go in peace .

and 2 nights after she was taken out of the stable yard a fox came in a took 5 of the hens and we never lost one while she was there

16 years good old age for a working dog my best dog only made it to 5 always sad to part company, but your dog had a good life and obviously a good owner, so look to the future, and enjoy the sport that brings happiness and sorrow in equal proportions all the best . YIS KIC.

Thanks lads, having her down in the stables for a couple of years has made it that little bit easier, she more or less became the woman that owns the yard's dog during her retirement and the kids have lost that attachment with her ,which is the hardest part for me ,when my boys feel lose, more so than my self but i have a 13 year old staff x here that is really coming to the end now aswell ,not half as bad as blackie but cant really handle being out walking in the heat anymore and i have reared him from day one when his dam died in the vets under the anesthetic having a cesarean section and he has basically grown up with my eldest and he has never being without him,but these are the joys of keeping dogs ,we all they won't live forever.

It's always hard when the time comes for the old dogs, i'm a firm believer in letting them go when they are suffering or are just too weak and frail to do anything, it's not fair on the dog or the owner, your old girl had a lovely life and an owner who obviously cares for his dogs, a few year back i had to have 2 of my oldies pts together as one was 15yr old and taking strokes and the other was blind and used the 15yr old as a guide to go everywhere, he would have been totally disorientated without her so it was kinder to have both oldies pts, it's always heartbreaking but kinder to let them go with their dignity.
