showmespeed 36
Got into a little bit of a heated debate last night with a terrierman. I.E. - Had a dog working a coon in the ground, working hard but the coon had grabbed the dogs locating collar and was working my dog over because the coon pretty much had him on the top of the collar and bottom feet on the bottom of the collar when they came out this hole / tree trunk den. yeah we were in the guts but that takes to long and my dogs are smart about not getting chewed up so this was a new event for him and I felt bad for the boy because the collar was stopping him from doing his job. That was the last time I used a collar on my dogs period when hunting. He said I was an idiot for working the dogs without locators on but at the same time my dogs hunt close, real close no more than 50 - 75 meters at the worst and I had only ever lost one when he was chasing then locating and it was due to chase where I fell behind and then the coon went in a hole, we got him located but I didn't paniac because he is a good at getthing his game but I hunt in a duo at least and the other dog found him, very few times I hunt one dog so I feel confident in this. We dig but not as often as many. Any thoughts or contributions. Our main game is coon for us in the states and those little hands like to grab by far. Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,936
Saw some pics today of Whin, coon hunting and yer right , those front paws could get a good old grip on a collar. Loctators are always a personal choice though. ATB Quote Link to post

jonesy 111
Never hunted coons, but my dog dosn,t go to ground without a collar for obvious reasons, how many times has someone said"oh this spot is no more than a foot" you put the dog in and it goes to a complete different part of earth and it,s"six foot ive never had it there before" 1 Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,936
The pics I saw today looked fantastic, those coons look like they could put up some fight, they look like a badger with opposing thumbs !! lol Quote Link to post
fat man 4,741
What happens when the duo of dogs get to ground together with both not wearing a collar as eventually they will.I have seen out and out sounders when doubled up take hold 1st chance they get as they feel brave when in company.Dont know anything about coons but do know terriers doubled up are a no no.Not alone is there the chance they wont sound but they can easily get smothered or injured due to 1 pushing the other to get upp to game, jmho. 2 Quote Link to post

DavidR 24
SMS, why did you not intervene. A coon is not going to kill your dog by biting it before you get to it above ground collar or not. If you learn traditional locating you can skip the collar, but when freecasting its hard to locate them when they are mute. If the dog is smart as you say it will change its style or its head will stay chewed to pieces. Dont loose a good dog to rookie mistakes. JMO Quote Link to post
richlee 73
let me know when dem collars come up for sale Quote Link to post
scooter3006 6
Just about every coon my dogs get, wraps up on thier collar. They just learn to get a good hold where thats all the coon gets ahold of. Around here a locator collar is a must. It's not uncommon to locate your dog 30' to 50' away from where they entered the earth. But to each his own. Quote Link to post
