My mate has a young dog that he wants to get started on foxes, hes the brother to my dog and is about 17 months old, He has run about 10 foxes on the lamp on his own but has yet to connect with one? Hes running full pelt at them and has bowled a few over and you can see him making snaps at them but not commiting to it?

Now I know the obvious thing is to give him a run with a dog already killing foxes, but the only other dog we have killing them is mine and we cant let these 2 brothers near each other!! They were fine until one day they had a scrap and now if they can they will just lock on to each others faces, :icon_eek: So what would you do to get this dog started?

We gave him one at the back end of the season with the mother of the dogs and he was doing well but she hit a wall lamping about a week later and had to be put down  When hes on the lamp it looks like the fox is going to be dead the way he runs but it doesnt happen, :hmm:

The dog has a bit of time on his side, the fact that it is only 17mths old. Just have a little patience, you shouldn't be chasing them at this time of year anyway . Give the youngster some 3/4 growns in july/august time. It should catch them and then you might see a difference. Out of curiosity what mix is the lurcher. I had two litter brothers going back 8yrs ago, one entered at 13mths to fox. The other was 16 1/2mths before the penny dropped. Just persiviere(sp) to many folk give in too soon. CHEERS WEX> :D

early days yet mate... i'd forget about foxes for a while maybe the dog will see them in a different perspective when he encounters his next one... i like a challenge, a collie bitch i had was the hardest dog i've seen when doubled up but when she was on her own she didnt want to know at all... i let her age a bit and took her for a dig with the terrier. i tied the terrier out of the way and let the lurcher in for a look... when her blood was up she done it by herself and never looked back till the age of 12... i lost count of toothed game she caught

it sounds to me like the dog does'nt know what to make of foxes yet, or he just simply can't catch one, theres far more dogs capable of killing foxes than there is capable of catching and killing them.

i dont think the dog is at the stage where he is scared of foxes if he is snapping at them, providing he has never caught one yet, so he should'nt have been bit or spoiled either.

its far easier to enter a dog to foxes when there working along side an experienced dog but if thats not possible, wait until september and get him on some cubs and plenty of, just to build his confidence.

however without even knowing anything about the dogs breeding its hard to say what the problem could be and sometimes its just the dog that is'nt capable whether mentally or physically.

good luck with him ;)

p.s this advice should come in handy if the hunting ban ever gets lifted ;)

slip him in to a fox with a dog that knows what it's doing, let the othere dog have it's way 1st then let the young dog in for a look.

what you don't need is the young dog getting fecked over by the fox, this will put him right off.

trust me he will go :big_boss:

all so the breed of the dog may be a big point here to

if you are still having probs im over your way soon ill bring my bullx bitch over with me, ill get it going for you.

Still waiting for my bitch to connect with one on the lamp, only slipped her on a few, she's to egar and over runs them, when she see's a fox she goes into a wild frenzy. When lamping bunnies she will catch and retrieve or miss and come back to slip, slip her on fox and she goes wild and hunts up when she misses. Cant wait for her to catch one she derserves it.

All the best and happy hunting
