weasle 1,119
I dont like mine to become to friendly,Ive seen photos of dogs sniffing sheep ect,But if your freelancing and some farmer sees your dog even going near hes sheep could be taken the wrong way,Iwant mine to totally ignore sheep and stay out of there way. Moll. 1,770
I don't think just walking them through sheep is enough. Putting the dog and sheep in positions which make a dog interested (eg sheep bouncing off fence, lone ewe in heavy cover) then checking your dog as it shows interest at these times is more beneficial. Weasle, my dog runs up to the dead ewes waiting for the knacker man, tail low and furiously wagging. Gives their muzzles a lick then looks positively distraught when they don't move Quote Link to post
artful212 394
i bring mine round all live stock and have a bamboo kane handy they tend to learn quickly enough as u say the more the dogs in contact the better Quote Link to post
weasle 1,119
Once you can trust them with these smelly mountain sheep,That tend to jump out of bits of cover, you can trust them any were.. Afew jerks on the lead at 8 weeks if they even look or cock a ear,and a growl of SHEEP,With a few refreshers as they grow and ive never had a problem, even use the sheep growl to break to anything chickens cows all SHEEP.Never had a problem yet. Moll differant for you living on a sheep farm for me i keep it simple dont even look at sheep. Quote Link to post
Chid 6,582
stock breaking why bother just do what i do and dress your dog in a wooly coat least then if it chases sheep the farmer just thinks its another sheep i think ive been lucky with my dog he was very switched on to me and seemed to know straight away sheep were a no no , dont do much lamping of sheep fields but i still like to get him round them for a refresher when i can Quote Link to post
