has the whippet cross become to popular to the detriment of the greyhound cross

Recommended Posts

Where are you getting your info Richard, most of the above is imo drivel :D

observations over the years,i thought with few exceptions it some'd the breeds up surerly a large breed running against a smaller breed has obvious advantages/disadvantages i was just trying to rekindle the topic as in my opinion the whippet cross is taking the field as the out and out lurcher ie with the accepted quarry being only rabbits on a course anyway.

A whippet may have it's quarry under pressure from the off, but not necessarily a cross, crossing can dilute the speed.

And greys usually have a good initial acceleration. Other than that i read the rest of your post wrong :icon_redface: ..... ie greyhounds are quiet. and whippets having loads of stamina. My appologies.

A simple, one word answer to your question.......... NO.   Cheers.

ifirstly i agree that the whippet has made a massive comeback. and not before time. however not as a pure or hybred. imo the whippet is being used to bring down the size of the lurcher and to tidy up

1/4 whipp 3/4 grey

pros of the whippet cross-has the quarry under pressure straight away, usually good turners,cons- weather conditions, not as powerful as other breeds, after that initial burst will it still be their, half the stride of some of the other breeds.stamina?,pros of greyhound cross- usually quiet powerful, fast at top end,can have good stamina, not afraid to take a knock,cons-acceleration can take a while to get their, turning will lose a stride sometimes two on smaller breed.

the thing with lurchers is everytime someone crosses two breeds they tend to break all the rules. and the offspring get different qualities that dont exist in the parents.

the above lurcher is half bred whippet

turns like a boat. poor take off . . allthough the benefits of the whippet generally show better when in high percentages or when mixed with the greyhound.

whippet blood is in my opinion at its stunning best. when kept pure. :victory:

18/22 inches is fine for a rabbiting dog round the doors for me only when u start to go further afield and start getting 20-30 good runs regularly would size really become a concern for me then the smaller stride and effort the dog was having to excerpt would have to be factored in.

i'm not of the opinion that the whippet is better than a small lurcher just that they are different animals altogether. and a whippet will be a lot better than a lurcher at some tasks. where as a good lurcher will exell at tasks that a whippet wouldnt.

to be honest my lurcher loses out on the speed front but gains with his weight/bulk. so like i say horses for courses

if i bred him to a whippet the offsping imo would lose what makes him different and i would be breeding poor grade whippets. to a greyhound you would keep some bulk gain speed and keep the gap between lurcher and whippet. so greyhounds have there uses.

here is another pic to show the gulf between some whippets. and lurchers. its easy to see they are made for totally different styles of work.

nice big head if hed been 3/4 whippet 1/4 wheaton would have been a bit racier but like you say you lose the bulk but i think a whippet cross for me anyway is strictly a quick dash dog 100-200 yards tops for anything else i would have chosen another breed depends what u want the dog to do.
