has the whippet cross become to popular to the detriment of the greyhound cross

Recommended Posts

with the taken up of a running dog and discussions prior to pitching my tent on a breed that would suit me i discussed at length with learned men of the sport it became apparent the whippet cross had become a stable mate of many a mans kennel however is this at the cost of the greyhound cross, is this a good thing given the current laws or an evolution of the sport.

A simple, one word answer to your question.......... NO.   Cheers.

ifirstly i agree that the whippet has made a massive comeback. and not before time. however not as a pure or hybred. imo the whippet is being used to bring down the size of the lurcher and to tidy up

1/4 whipp 3/4 grey

 Err,.could you repeat the question please...

Chalky; I understand the question to be; is the Whippet taking over from the Greyhound, to the detriment of Lurcher breeding ? And my answer, even though I'm a great supporter of Whippets; is a resounding NO !!

Cheers.

surely the whippet cross is now more abundant than ever and if a running dog is breed only one of two dogs can be used as a base speed wise as a rule these dogs would be whippet or the greyhound

No mate; I had Whippets and Whippet crosses since the 60's, and the Whippet probably had it's hay-day in the 60's and 70's. But, yes, it IS, gladly, making a strong comeback, but it will never usurp the Greyhound as a base breed for Lurcher breeding.

pros of the whippet cross-has the quarry under pressure straight away, usually good turners,cons- weather conditions, not as powerful as other breeds, after that initial burst will it still be their, half the stride of some of the other breeds.stamina?,pros of greyhound cross- usually quiet powerful, fast at top end,can have good stamina, not afraid to take a knock,cons-acceleration can take a while to get their, turning will lose a stride sometimes two on smaller breed.

Where are you getting your info Richard, most of the above is imo drivel :D

observations over the years,i thought with few exceptions it some'd the breeds up surerly a large breed running against a smaller breed has obvious advantages/disadvantages i was just trying to rekindle the topic as in my opinion the whippet cross is taking the field as the out and out lurcher ie with the accepted quarry being only rabbits on a course anyway.

different subject but id be to biased to comment having seen one on cut its leg off on a sheep trough and many more hap hazard ones my mates use to make me cringe every time it was slipped but each to their own cant deny their drive
