All any of us can do is keep at it-show the next gen the correct way to conduct themselves, respect the dogs, respect your quarry, respect your permission, backfill etc-does not help when you have lads go

terriers are an addiction and obbsesion how many times have you came home after a dig and replayed it in your head til the early hours or the night before you go til a fresh bit of ground and you cant

after the recent thread got locked i have been mulling over the future for working terriers. in the uk. and the issue of the quality of the future terriers. i dont work my dogs to ground the same no

I totally agree with the fact that the majority of people who currently work terriers will continue to do so no matter what laws are passed. But once this generation is gone who will have the fortitude and the passion to keep it going, where will the new blood come from ?

Addiction is the right word, reading the last few posts those feelings of excitement and anticipation burn inside me as strongly now as they did 40 years ago when I first went out with my father. The world of 40 years ago is a million miles away from the world of today, all we wanted to do was be outside hunting ,fishing whatever it didn't matter.

For me terriers were something of a natural evolution rather than a baptism of fire, we always had terriers around the place and they were always some variation of a russell, no named lines just our terriers ,to be honest we didn't know or care what was in them half the time. There you'd be sitting in school watching the clock waiting for the bell to ring, run home schoolbag fired in the hall grab a jam sandwich , a few snares and the dogs and off you'd be gone up the fields. While you'd be setting the snares and hoping that they'd have tomorrows dinner in them when you'd check them in the morning ,the dogs would be doing their thing bushing around after rabbits.Every now and then depending on the dog , one would drop down a hole and if needed would have to be dug out and it all progressed from there.

My father was the type of man who was only interested in hunting for the pot so as the years passed and the quarry changed we were left to our own devices but we worked to the ethics that had been instilled into us of respect for quarry, dogs, land and above all yourself.Mistakes were made along the way and dogs were lost ,but never by intent and when I left home those same no named terriers came with me and I worked them adding what I needed to up until some years ago when I had to give it all up for health reasons.

Now I have only one child and he's 12 , he's never been around working dogs as they were gone by the time he was old enough to take out. A modern child of the xbox generation ,lately he's been looking through copies of my edrd and countrymans weekly and showing some interest,so I've shown him how to make a snare like my father showed me and told him to make a few of his own and take them up the fields and if he looks after them properly we'll take it from there. I'd love to think that passion burns as brightly in him as in me but if I'm honest with myself I don't really think so but I'll give him every opportunity I can.

gb the uk whatever u want to call it has become a people ruled by the minority and the upper class unfortunately this will lead to further persecution of the workingman and his past times hunting with dogs is now headed in a downward spiral i have never worked terriers nor never will as i prefer bushing and coursing but the working terrierman and lurcherman unfortunately is now a bygone era my uncle worked his own sealyham terriers for twenty years on various game the problem is not the sport or the people that enjoy it,its the general public half of which didnt grow up in this rich heritage of hunting that now are and forever will be a stumbling block.

most of the trouble with lurcher and terrier work particularly terrier work has come from within the working dog men circle .........................idiots with cini cameras mobile phones digi cams etc etc .........................morons gave the general public a bad impression ......with the ammo WE supplied itS A WONDER DOG OWNERSHIP IN THIS COUNTRY IS ALLOWED..........once we gave them enough ammo they went into bullshit overdrive.and we were/are screwed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing is there's young (ish) lads like me dieing to get into terrier work but it seems nobody is willing to take someone new out due to fear of the newbie turning out to be some sort of anti or just a big mouth that will land them in trouble even if the work they're doing is totally legit. I could go out buy a earth dog and start digging tomorrow but I'd have to figure it out for myself or from books/Internet and learn the hard way and probably get in trouble along the way too. That is another factor imo that will go against terrier work in the UK.

this is the xbox generation nowadays so our way of life is frouned upon. the kids are becoming lazier and if they cant get it delivered to theyre bedrooms then they dont wana know, but what chance have they got whenever theyre trying to outlaw our way of life, in my eyes theyre banning everything and are doing nothing to promote countrysports which as we all know has many health benefits. theyre gona push it into an underground sport
