gamerooster 1,179
Collies are easier to train than salukis as they need someone who understands the breed. There are plenty of brains in salukis and I don't need to herd any sheep. as long as my dog jumps, has good recall and is stock broken, i coudllent give a shit what fancy tricks he can do!!! 1 Quote Link to post
Collie man 2
For a 1st dog I wouldn recommend a saluki would you ? Quote Link to post
gamerooster 1,179
For a 1st dog I wouldn recommend a saluki would you ? truthfully, yes and no!!! its a matter of horses for courses, no point having a 20'' bedlington whippet if your running big arable land, and no point in having a 28 inch bull greyhound if you plan to supply rabbits to the gamedealer, obviosly salukis arent for everyone, and not all are as good as others, but once again its a matter of nature vs nurture, what you put in is what you get out!!! and my first dog was a saluki, but let me tell you this, you wont get nowhere shouting and screaming at one, its more a game of mind tricks and thinking 2 steps ahead with a saluki, praising for good things, and ignoring the bad, bar the likes of stock worrying and such, but there is no reason why a saluki based dog cant be used for ferreting and suchlike activities. mighty celt 996
For a 1st dog I wouldn recommend a saluki would you ? why not,did you own 1, there not that hard to train once you create a bond with them early, and dont de heavy handed with them which you shouldnt be with any pup, id pick saluki over collie everytime, and the dog im running now has a nice bit of collie in it, so im not being biased. Very true but as opposed to have one or the other I would rather get a cross of the 2 from grafting parents and hope for the best. Gaz Quote Link to post
Guest born to run1083
Saluki crosses are a tough one they have there purpose especially as a day dog but I'm not to sure I would have them myself. As said you've got to have the right temperament to get the best out of one and a feck load of patience. Seen some very handy saluki/whips all done there job well enough more of a point and slip kind of dog but overall not bad Quote Link to post
