Jackers....a dog tight on a hare when the hare goes through a gate or sheepwire fence n the dog stops its a jacker and shouldnt be brought home.a good dog should bust hedges if tight on a hare.full salukis run on the fens n then brought to ireland are notorious for this thats why their breeding whippet into them.

so a top class hare can't be used for lamping rabbits as it will bust into a ditch and keep going !!!! not have a go just want to see how people would class a jacker

Hitcher there is just some obstacles that a dog cant get through or go over does no mean there a jacker.Hitcher the dog prop brought the fox back because there is near a full moon. in dark night the fox would have been gone. So you be happy with a dog clear fences in the dark jumping in the un knowing.You can only get away with that for so long.A lucher should know the difference in the prey its runs .Should know the difference between hare and rabbit. My dogs don't smash hedges on the lamp does that mean there jackers?????After all its only a rabbit there going be another 10 or so in the next field rather have dog on the lend that a dog lied up in the pen

an over used word is jacker, normally to cover the inadequacies of the owner or to justify the need to get rid so as to make room for the next wonder cross. ive a dog here that will run himself to death before he will pull up or give in, does that make him a jacker ive got an old dog aged 10 who`s lost all his pace, does that make him a jacker ive a young dog here, who, when aged 12months couldnt catch a poatage stamp in a postbox, did that make him a jacker preban ive seen dogs that didnt like the sharp end but were mustard on hares, did that make them jackers i ve also preban seen dogs that excelled on teeth and hoof but couldnt hold a feather to a good winter hare, did that make them jackers as i said a word thats very over used

How do you know hed run himself to death untill hes done it.Thats as bad as lads going on about their dead game bulldogs or terriers that are still alive.

funny thread so call experts on here if i put up a line or named a dog there be 200 replys half would start about them jacking lol but know want to say what is a jacker or what jacking is but are quick to mock or call another mans dog or line a jackers

Its like asking what is an alrounder.. some will say a dog that can lamp and day time meaning ferreting,, but when i say day time i mean lepus ,,, I think the term jacker is an easy label to put on any dog... as half of them don't no what do call it

if i am out lamping and a rabbit goes in the next field my lamp is of and dog is right back to my feet i like to do one field at a time

went out with a lad one night his dog done it never agian had a shit night dog jumping when the lamp went off not my thing

Jacker is a bit to much of a "one size fits all" term for my liking

 

IMHO, You have dogs that are:

 

Top Class

 

Good enough

 

Not up to scratch

 

And the only person that can make that distinction is the lad that has to work the animal as its only that person that knows what they expect.

i know what your saying about obstacles but the owner should know if a dog is trying or not.

I videod the last Waterloo Cup, and on one course a black and white dog simply gave up the chase, when both dogs were being beat by the hare, and slowed downd, turned round and went walkabout !! The other dog carried on, even though the hare had it beat, and even went out into the rough after the hare. The black and white dog is a jacker, the other one isn't !

the owner should know if a dog is trying or not.

 

Owners should know a lot of things matey but they dont, its easier to put a label on the dog because they dont have the brains to think the events through.

They also dont have the brains to know if they are being honest with themselves or making excuses for the dog........you cant make that decision in two minutes, it takes a bit of thinking about.

 

There are so many veriables where dogs are concerned (hunting lurcher and terrier dogs that is)

I take a slightly different opinion on that mate, if the dog has a little bit of history doing that then I would agree with you but you cant tell from one run if that dog was in top condition or injured itself in the run or was carrying an old injury.....not excuses, but you need to think about it as you could do away with a perfectly good dog for the wrong reasons.

A dog that stops at hedges fences gates imho is brainy not jacker the key is to position your dog into a situ that allows the dog to run its quarry.

If it outruns my hound good luck and see you next time I say.
