Unlicensed Boxing

Recommended Posts

Anyone got any experience of it?

I've heard, depending on where you fight and who for, that the weigh ins don't mean much, and there are some nasty people that get in the ring. I know the medical side of it is usually top notch, and also that there is money to be made...

It's bigger round Gnash's way I believe, how many of you have went to watch a bout?

Just to clarify, unlicensed doesn't mean illegal.

Nice one

I used to be the sparring partner for the GB under 21 full contact karate champion, and I was 3 years younger. Thought I was the dogs b*****ks until I was told it was only because I could stand there and take punches all day

I only ask as I'm just getting back to boxing and feel I'd be getting on a bit to turn pro (Also assuming I was good enough), so thought I'd look at the unlicensed game as well...

"Blue collar boxing" nites we would have in certain establishments locally round my way. The local lads participate obviously, head guards on etc. a certain % goes to a charity. good night out. I went for it once and trained 2 wks prior, I knew I wasn't really bothered about the lad from "the other end off town" I was being matched up with. Thursday afternoon I got word to turn up anyway for the event the next night. but my fight was cancelled the lad had pulled out. So i was only an extra so I didn't know who I would be in with if it went that way. Unfortunately the 2nd fight off the night was a young lad that I knew up against some guy nobody knew ! 2- 3 min rounds. The young lad I knew got the f****d knocked out start of the 2nd round, ambulance material !! Totally unorganised and it developed that the fella that he was up against was a semi pro boxer ?? It could have turned out very messy. All for £50 a popp and a good nights Craic ! Don't think so.

My dads pal done some white collar boxing, made the mistake of saying that he'd boxed before, it was when he was a young boy though, anyway on the night he was put in the ring with a guy 2 1/2 stone heavier than him, he won still but got a hiding in the process, said he'd never do it again.

Police have just cancelled one in scarborough this weekend c**ts , say it wasn't ran by a boxing club or a association ??? If its not illegal how can they stop it ??

Usually a 'Preserving public peace' speech they give...

Look at the conduct of Haye and Chisora in front of the worlds media, that was a sanctioned event did they stop that?

Aye they are as is the bbboc, they like to have ultimate control over everything so don't like it when money slips through their grasp... Thing is if you step in the ring then you take your chances, every single amateur boxer that I've watched, and I mean every single one, had some 'unofficial' fights behind them that were never declared. It seems to be almost standard practise nowadays.

Personally i cant stand the unlicensed scene it was ok back in the Mclean/Shaw era but it gained a " gangster type " image and has never really lost that image........a bunch of nasty loudmouthed women screaming their heads off and pissed up blokes acting tough while cheering their mates on.....thats not my idea of fun but each to their own.

If theres a chance you could turn pro then why would anyone even contemplate fighting unlicensed !....Unlicensed is normally for people who cant get a pro licence be it for talent, criminal or medical reasons..............after all said and done if a mans handy in a straightener theres a whole bunch of others out there in the same position who are earning dough from it and they dont have a bunch of daft women and pissed up blokes screaming at them ;)

Well gnash these blue collar events don't really interest me, I was thinking of taking it a bit more seriously... As I said at 24 it feels like my chances of going pro aren't as good as someone who's been boxing since they were a schoolboy, then again maybe I'm just being a fanny and need to get a grip
