johnny boy, out of curiosity how were your bitches parents bred?

I'm not 100% sure as the memory aint what it was, I'll dig my diary out later and check, the sire was out of Taffy and I think the dam is Stormin Norman bred.

was there plenty of interest in the litter? how many pups were there?

don't think i'm getting my point over......if i were to breed jazz to a collie x would there be enough decent guys out there after a collie x cross collie x if she had 10 or a dozen pups, theres lots of quality and different collie x type studs to choose from but do i pick what i'd want or what was going to be popular? ........i reckon if i were to put her to a deerhound x i'd get plenty of interest......i've had a couple of local guys say they'd like a pup whatever i chose but that still leaves a lot of pups looking for a home and i'd want to make sure they went to at least decent if not working homes

I think he would use a injured bitch maybe with bad feet or maybe bad wrists I dunno 100% if it would but I would of thought breeding from injury prone dogs would only increase the chance of injury? He's is a business man and a business man is init for the money so there for a cheap ex track injured bitch or not would be good for business for him I don't believe he thinks about the offspring and who has them and what they do with them it's simply money he's after and this is why I won't be after another one!yes it is not rocket since to breed a decent litter it's depends on you circumstance of where your living still at home at 21 I'm not a free man to do what I want with the dogs lol

as far as i know he doesn't use bitches with dodgy feet, producing pups that potentially have dodgy digits wouldn't be good for long term business............fck i wish i was 21 and still living at home i'd be a rich man and freeeeeeee

This post just goes to show your not in business for yourself, while profit is a consideration, turning out complete crap would ruin his business. The lurcher world is a small market place, and with the power of the internet, pushing injury prone dogs would see you out of business in no time at all.

All the pups found homes, the breeder who owned both dam and sire only had to advertise 2 and they both went up your way. There were 7 in the litter of the 4 that stayed local my bitch is the only one left alive.

What kind of work do you do with your her birddog?and what cross is she?

mostly rabbiting, lamping she was scary when young really high prey drive stuff but she's settled down lots works without a slip, takes sitters live to hand etc. ferreting she's ace, does everything needed, i'm of an age when 'Chalky's' articles years ago inspired me so ive tried her with the long and gate nets, i've found with long nets it's obedience and practise and although not always 100% she's really getting there. with the gate nets i've held her back a bit i think, i was looking for collie type outruns and specific type fields etc but it's at least at the start far more down to my fieldcraft sussing what gates are used regularily and how many exits there are but she seems to be getting the knack she's even marked a field or two. ive got another old fashioned target or two for her but there still in their infancy. she's 3/8 beardies border x 5/8 greyhound

That sounds my type of dog birddog I like the feild craft side of things my first lurcher was the same breeding as yours but reverse lovely bitch she was but died at a young age she was a Hancock breed dog but nether tested,I have a Hancock lurcher now she's a three quarter breed greyhound way she is a very obiedent dog coming along with ferreting and lamping she's ok at but my big problem with he's is he feet and she has a bad wrist I feel this is down to her breeding I think he would use weak greyhounds if I'm honest.i love the dog to bits and wouldn't part with her as she's more than a working dog to me that my opinion on this subject.

Bottom line is any collie x will take work.

There are plenty dogs being bred from shit workers that get sold as working lurchers , but thats OK is it.

Any dog will work to an extent if you put the work in, and if the above dog does what I want then I will be happy with him.

My views on Hancock are well known. The place was fine when I was there, he is a dog breeder, yes, like MANY others. Lots of his lurchers are sold as pets, just like many others. He does not say they will all make top workers, it`s up to you if you buy one to put the effort into it.

Me personally I would not give most bull x lurchers room in my kennels, but thats my preferance, and I would not dream of condeming them all because I don`t like them. That would be silly and imature !! hahahahahahaha.

dont agree with hancocks but that is a nice dog rakeabout

ya right there richard he is a nice type the beardieof the rught type can get ya good qualitys , as for hancock using poor greys i am afraid most are either non graders or broken down animals . atb bunnys.

but i think youd have a waiting list if you were to mate her in the future to a good 1st cross maybe like 'birds' 'bryn' youd get some smashing 3/8 5/8 pups

Re breeding collie cross greys, I believe the collie is as much if not more Important than the grey. Ex track greyhounds are easy enough to come by but sound balanced Collies are not as common. If you put the wrong type of Collie in you stand to have a lurcher that's neurotic and too manic to live with.

Would Mr Hancock breed from injured bitches, I don't believe so as it would be a bad advertisement for his stock, as we all know most people who know jack shit about Hancock dogs are quick to criticise and any hint of him using poor breeding stock would be jumped all over and publicised on all forums and that would impact upon his trade.

In my case I spoke to him regarding mine being manic, his constant howling in his kenne,l and he immediately offered a replacement, didn't fancy condemning the pup without a bit more effort though so kept him (thought about that decision a few times since though!).

Re the early socialisation of the pups and Sally, there are so many dogs at his place and so many pups at any one time I don't think it's possible. I thought I could address this shortfall by my own socialising of the pup but I believe that the pups there have such little early socialisation it's difficult to fully recover.
