Guest vin
done this and said it before...my mates greyhound track dog managed to nail his wifes doby bitch..they kept a pup and so did a mate..the bitch looked like a saluki X type 24" and built for speed, endless stamina and very brainy.. it was the 80s and Parvo claimed it so it was never fully tested..but it was splattering daytime hares at 12 months old for fun. The dog from the litter was massive, about 29" of power and muscle..He was never fully tested but did ok on the odd trip out lamping..I'm quite certain that in the right hands it would have made a very good dog for large game. I saw a dog in porta pollensa Mallorca last summer and that was a Doby X Grey..they told me that the rest of the litter were doing very well and actually being used for hunting..If they can work over there..im sure they would be ok over here. Tricky bit is getting a good Doby bitch. Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
I have always said I want another doberman one day, both mine are at my parents now. If when I've moved house and settled I do decide to get one to keep watch of the yard then I will import the best bitch from german bloodline I can and IF she shows the promise in the field that my old bitch did then I will line her with a greyhound, keep 2 pups back and cull the rest. Not in a bid to reinvent the wheel, just curiosity. Gaz Quote Link to post
strongbow 149
25 years ago a well known terrierman had a dob lurcher cross in west wales that was used on the hill to hunt foxes, one of the best dogs i've seen hunt an catch a fox, he was a black rough coated dog that could hunt, mark, an catch foxes for fun. at the time his owner wrote in the old shooting news. Just don't think it's in the UK. I reckon there will be a few old time dobes on them German hills living with an old bloke in his log cabin. I'd like to think so anyway Quote Link to post
bandcamp 0
i have two doberman/greyhound puppies they were an accident so got them cheap but they are great dogs very intelligent Quote Link to post
*The*Field*Marshall* 674
Hmmm I've given thought to this potential breeding before, but came to the conclusion that the cross probably wouldn't provide anything more in a dog that hasn't already been proven in an established cross. As for "splattering" day time hares for fun, hmm I wonder under what circumstance. . I think salukis would be out of business if that were true! As for keeping two pups and "culling" the rest...? O KAY. Bottom line for me, get a cross that's already proven and save the puppies! Yours in sport. Quote Link to post
STAFFY poacher 90
there was a litter of first cross doberman salukis bred a while ago come 6-7 months down the line there was 4 or 5 back up for sale Quote Link to post

I said I would cull them because I wouldnt want to be responsible for 8-10 pups being passed from pillar to post if they turned out useless. Is that so bad? Quote Link to post
chartpolski 23,034
This old girl was bred in Holland, from German stock. She was given to me in Saudi Arabia to replace a Saluki I had to have PTS. I brought her back to the UK and worked her with the Lurchers. She took a couple of rabbits on the lamp and even one or two daytime, more down to good luck than owt else ! LOL ! She's the Doberman mentioned in the "Rescue Dog" chapter of Darcy's book, "Now Thats What I call Lurcherwork 2". We used her for flushing deer from the woods and the rough, to the Lurchers Bruce and Delta. I personaly wouldn't have bred Lurchers from her; but for anyone that was determined to do it, she would be the type to use. Cheers. Quote Link to post
THELURCHERANDLONGDOG 91
why would you want this cross? what could it do that bullx could not do? its got to bring something better to the table than a bullx! Brains ! Quote Link to post
Guest vin
As for "splattering" day time hares for fun, hmm I wonder under what circumstance. . I think salukis would be out of business if that were true! It was the 1980s mate..the lads were out every day and night..the bitch in question was doing very very well on the hares...as for in what circumstance obviously were not talking about waterloo cup rules..were talking about mooching them up..and knocking them out of there seats a lot of the time...But i can honestly tell you that the dog in question had everyone in the area talking about it..they all said bollox until they saw it..and then when they saw it actually run..they were very suprised..the dog had a very good conformation and a great stride. im not trying to sell you one or even recommend breeding a pup..im just telling what i know and have seen with my own eyes. Adam_Chuck 256
Wasnt many of the first crosses an experiment to start off with? Everyone always says what will this bring to the table that other crosses have, wont have the drive of a bull x or stamina of a saluki etc. But no one will know untill it is tried and tested. Elaboration taken into account vin, as they say "seeing is believing" you've seen, I'll take your word for it. And yes, I'm sure they would have excelled with bigger game. Shame about the bitch.
