crorider 174
With all due respect, you can't really go buying in dogs to feed your new "buzz" or "addict" as you put it because you want to hunt rabbits for a while. How long did your other "hobbys" last. You mention football, poker, drink and drugs... What if in 5 years you need a new buzz? What happens to your dogs then when they wanna work and you are out playing your new game? You don't really get into this game for a buzz. It just finds you. That's from my experience anyway. I had an air rifle in my hand before my teenage years. I've always ratted with dogs. Then I went for a mooch with a lad with lurchers about 3 years ago and he had some pups for sale so I got one. I still air rifle shoot from time to time and I still rat now and then but running dogs are my life now. Just think about it mate. My ip adress has only just allowed me back on this site. thought id been banned! I appreciate your concern mate, but my dog is my life, nothing will ever cause me to neglect him in any way. I want to work him more for his own enjoyment than mine. But you cant seriously say nobody is in this game for the buzz?? If it's your life like you say it is then you must get a buzz from it? Anyway regardless I'm taking my chihuahua yorkie whippet ferretting with someone whos offerred to show me the ropes, then ill try him on the lamp. Need to find permission first but not really sure how to go about that. He actually caught his first bunny the other day whilst walking him through the fields. he just pinned it down in the bush, never killed it. It werent till i called him out that i realised he had one, after shouting at him to come out he finally did and just let it go when i saw him. i think he thought he was in trouble cos he hadnt came back. the rabbit stumbled off whilst my dog wagged his tail faster than ive ever seen it wag lol. crorider 174
Im moving house soon cos i aint allowed to keep my dog in this place anymore and as soon as i do which should be in a month i want a bitch pup to work with him cos i think hes gonna make a brilliant little busher. if tthats what you call em?? Ill get a ''proper lurcher'' and see if that makes all the super hunters on this site happy, but i still reckon my accidental toy lurcher will catch a lot more than most people on here will ever give him credit for Quote Link to post
South hams hunter 8,922
People don't get in the game for the buzz, well the ones that do don't last long. Lurchers are to most of us a way of life, nearly all of us live, breath and dream dogs and hunting. We don't casually take the dogs for a stroll we have our own miniature regimes for fitness and food an dedicate most of our free time ( I.e when not with the family) to our dogs and love for hunting. There are people that do it as a casual hobby and from my experience they tend to be the people that let our sport down as they just don't have the dedication to do it properly. if you just enjoy your little dog chasing the odd bunny then stick to that rather than getting a second dog, especially a dog with bull in because it will be a lot more high rate than what you currently have. if I was you just stick to what you have and go out the odd time wih your mate until you really are sure what this game entails Quote Link to post
crorider 174
So youre telling me you dont get a buzz from watching a dog youve bought on yourself from a pup make its first kill?? Do me a favour mate, it wouldnt be a way of life for you if that werent the case. how do you know it wont be a way of life for me?? If you knew me before and after i got my dog you wouldnt be telling me to wait till im sure what the game entails. Getting a dog has dramatically changed my life. as silly as it sounds its cured my depression. keeping him happy keeps me happy and finally gives me a purpose in life. i know how funny you people find my posts but i actually dont care. im just being honest about my reasons for being on here. who makes the rules anyway? All i know is my dog will be happier with a companion to hunt with so why wouldnt i?? I agree about the bull tho. ive looked more into and dont need any bull in my dog. i want beddy sal grey type bitch i think Quote Link to post
South hams hunter 8,922
Of course I get a buzz but I don't do it purely for the buzz. How do you know he will be happier? Where do you keep getting these crosses? It doesn't work like that, people breed to suit themselves not to suit people like you. Also you say about a pup yet the dog you have now isn't hunting properly Quote Link to post
crorider 174
I know he'll be happier cos he's a very sociable dog, and its a fact that nothing makes a dog happier than hunting in packs. Its pure instinct, the only instinct thats stronger for a dog is to mate! Ive read and read so much about different types of crosses, but one thing that all lurchers have in common is that theyre all pack orientated animals that have a strong desire and incredible ability to hunt most animals in our country, and seeing as rabbits are the only legal prey in this country i dont think the type of cross i choose is really very important. theyre all capable of being great rabbitting dogs, from what i understand it all comes down to luck in how that individual dog turns out combined with how well its worked trained fed and conditioned. and as im new to the game im sure my pack wont be breaking any records but does that really matter? from what ive read about bed/grey x sal/grey they can make outstanding dogs and i think they look the bollox aswell. So why wouldnt i want one?? Quote Link to post

South hams hunter 8,922
I've not heard of any of that cross. Not all dogs like to be in packs at all, a lot of Lurchers hate being around other dogs when worki g as they want to do it themselves. You don't need 2 Lurchers to chase rabbits in a park. crorider 174
Well as i said, my dog is very sociable and loves being around other dogs. Wether i need 2 dogs or not is irrelivant, what are you finding so difficult to understand?? I AM GETTING ANOTHER DOG!!! And my dog spends half the time i walk him in the bushes. i thought thats how you hunt rabbits in the daytime?? a terrier in the bush and a hound outside the bush? Quote Link to post
