other uses for hounds?

Hi all,

This may sound a bit stupid but I was interested to see if anyone uses hound types for anything other than the traditional sport they were bred for? For example I didn't know if they could be used for their nose to mark rabbit burrows? This is just a stab in the dark as I am not to well versed in working hound types. Will be interested for any replies though.

Dan,

Hounds will mark their quarry to ground, but if they are on a hot scent above ground they are hard to stop. Their prey drive is very high, so if your after a hound for marking only you will have trouble stopping them from hunting. Beagles have been used as sniffer dogs by many services for years now, so this is a use other than their intended use. A good terrier or lurcher is far better to be used purely for marking, hounds are born to hunt.

Thank's for putting that video up i was expecting to watch a small pack of fell hounds pulling a sledge or raceing huskie's instead i get shite music and huskie's and wasted 2.45 mins of my life you cuni

yes mate some people just keep and breed them for the show ring and arnt worried about the way they hunt as long as they look good

the 3rd dog to the right is a treeing walker , i use her to hunt hogs
