They can't interview kids without an adult and they know that. Just because a cop says something doesn't make it so. If they had told your lad it was illegal for him to wear a green hat, would he stop wearing green hats?

I'd write to the head of whatever police station they came from and ask for clarification of the law.

Once you get confirmation the cops were talking rubbish, your lad can take a copy of the letter with him next time.

They will not "make his life hard" to get back at you for complaining, rather they will treat him with kid gloves if they bump into him again.

if thats the case how could they ask the lad who his parents are? i know thats being a bit perdantic but i think it makes sense, they have to ask a few questions, they are not allowed to interview without an adult, but an interview is recorded and can be used against them, hense the reading of rights etc etc. they do have a job to do and not all of them are bad, however they were wrong in this case.
