BORDERSCOT 3,816
My lad, who is 14, hunts rats on the riverbank close to where we live 3 or 4 nights a week. He takes one of the older terriers and a youngster with him and he has decent success - averaging 20/30 per week...the other night he was digging away with two terriers and the police called him up from the river saying they'd had a complaint from the SSPCA and that what he was doing was illegal as hunting with dogs is banned. My boy explained that he was legally allowed to hunt rats - he has permission from several shop/cafe/private property owners - a fact that the police dismissed pretty smart. Hunting rats with dogs is illegal!!!!!!! They took his details, name, age, address and whilst the male police officer was taking more details which included my name and occupation the female started checking over the dogs. She started to comment on the scars and damage the older bitch has - which isn't anything too much out of the ordinary - and also asked how the young dog has a wee bit damage - few small nips - the lad said they sometimes scrap as they don't lke each other...they then told him to leave the riverbank on that they would be keeping a lookout for him... Needless to say I'm not to happy about this - especially the questioning and examination of the dogs. My boy asked them "should I go and get my dad" and said they could come and speak to me. But they weren't interested...just laid down their warped and wrong interpretation of the law and left. Do I complain or do I keep the head down??? I've never needed to be asked twice to rock the boat but maybe calm waters and an unrocked boat is the answer??? What to do???? Take care Quote Link to post
whippet 99 2,613
personally i would leave it, you dont want to open up a can of worms , they can make your life very difficult if they want, they should never interegated your boy with out an adult there i wouldnt of thought, but that just proves the same narrow minded people who was behind the ban.......................and i find it disgusting when the law and people we should tell are kids to trust in .........................dont even know there own legislation, how on earth can we tell are kids to trust the authority................? fooking disgrace 2 Quote Link to post
weekend.rifle 44
hmmm now that is a drama, i understand the wish to rock the boat and get them to understand that your lad was right and what your doing isnt illegal......however this could cause them to get their backs up, which in turn could cause them to find other ways to make it difficult for you. to this end i would recommend getting the information contained in the law printed off and retained for taking with you or your son whenever you go. you basically have to have everything set up to answer any question they may have, so proof of id, adress etc, permission, the laws, and anything else specific to the hunting you are undertaking. hope this is helpful, tony 1 Quote Link to post

ollywilli 49
I would agreed with above, if I did the same in my job I would be in the *****. I have a copy of the relevant part of the hunting with dogs act in my wallet so if the instance occured I could produce it when I am tackled to put the "professionals" in their place. In my job as a building inspector you don't go spouting off rubbish of what you think is right, only the facts and if your not sure you find out first.. Imo Good luck with it, if your lad carries a copy of that part of the act it may help in the future. 1 Quote Link to post
Waz 4,262
I would ask at the station the names and numbers of the coppers involved, then write in and complain. 2 Quote Link to post
