border lad 1,047
A young Lad on Here asked the question, what x is the best Rabbit dog? my answer was collie xgrey/whippet, some thing of that mix, in general they have a great nose for marking, the setts, they have that burst of speed for the Bolted rabbit, and they generally have a nice mouth also they have a natural, ability to retrieve there quarry back to Hand, in good condition, ((( not like a rag doll, they are biddable, Stay, and stand, THE COLLIE, is used in Natural farm work, Mountain rescue teams use them, and in Natural disasters, work searching for and marking, for bodies, they excell in Agility and obstacle, racing, its only there unfit handlers, that Hinder them, they can turn on a 5pence piece,, ADD natural running speed to the collie, you have a natural Rabbiting dog + more, you have to school them, like any other cross, they learn fast, they generally have very good feet, nose, eye, and coat, and they are very loyal, can become good watch dogs as well, this topic is intended for the novice rabbiter, who is wondering what x shall I get??? in normal situations they chase there quarry in silent Mode, not yapping, 1 Quote Link to post
Richard Morgan 38
an older wiser man than me would totally agree with u totally and wont have anything else hes got a collie/saluki/whippet after a 15 year absense from the dogs and its a joy to watch work but me personally think u can sometimes have to much in the way of brains however i wouldnt touch a bull cross with a barge poll seen some good ones but not for me. 1 Quote Link to post

johnny boy68 11,726
Collie x's are great dogs for the rabbiting game BUT an inexperienced handler can find them an handful. If you click with them they are great "companion" dogs, I have always had a collie x about me and probably always will. 6 Quote Link to post

Del if we were talking all quarry then I'd agree but for the rabbit game I don't think your right to be honest as rabbits go collie x's seem to be natural at it and with the right owner can be taken to a place. Just got to be bred from the right stuff and the right collie has to be used. What else do you think you need for the humble rabbit??????? 1 Quote Link to post
chartpolski 24,139
Seen some good ones and seen some bad ones, as with ALL crosses; was it down to the dog or the handler ? I've only ever had one Collie X, and it was OK on rabbits, but was useless to me as I like an "allrounder". It could jump like a stag, but lacked the speed for hares. Of course, I can't equate ALL Collie X's on the performance of this one, but it DID sour my view of ever owning another. Some people swear by them, and Typp Ratcher was telling me the number of hares that Collie Johns Dogs were taking and I believe him, but I think they are the exception rather than the rule. Of course, the title of the post is "Collie X for rabbiting", and for that job they will, in the right hands, do very well....... but better than other crosses ? Who knows ? Cheers. sandymere 8,263
Horses for courses and for rabbits they do well, there's a 3/4 whippet 1/4 collie for sale on here which should make a handy little rabbit dog in the right hands, would have it myself if I had room as I could use an obedient nippy little thing on the lamp. Ive found bedlington crosses just as natrual and would prefer a good beddy cross over a collie cross but then again the better dogs i have seen have been a mix of the two reafirming my veiw that lurcher to lurcher bred types imho are far better than any first cross bred lurchers even for rabbits. gamerooster 1,179
from what i can gather a lot of collie crosses excel at catching feather aswell, but i hear so do beddy crosses. my humble opinion is where the bedlington lacks in brains against the collie, it makes up for it in sheer determination, which i think is an attribute in itself, as i have seen a lot of collie crosses give up when a rabbit makes a bee-line for the hedge, but thats were my saluki dog catches most of his rabbits, the same can be said for a lot of bedlington crosses i have seen.
