gibbo1973 187
a friend of mine has a black lab dog which they purhased from a non working stock and have it as a pet, is a big strong type built like a brick shit house ,over weight but big boned type ,i has issues with men ,quad bikes , horses ,it even gets excited when other dogs arrive at him ,it has turned on its owner when trying to seperate a confrontation ,today when a horse walked passed it bit the owners dad who was walking it for them ,i ve mentioned having its balls off and getting it muzzled before it really does sink its teeth into something or someone ,the dog is very good in the house and with the kids but i cant get through to the owner even though ive not had a problem with it when i walk with it and my dogs . whats your thought s ??????????? dog bites and kids its not worth thinking about its a good guard and protective dog but how far will it go ??????? drakeshead gunner 26
Sounds like they cnt see the Forrest through the trees mate, people forget to give a dog what it needs and concentrate on what the dog can give them. Even though dogs have been domesticated for a long time they still have primal needs and the most important is its place in a pack. From what u have said it seems that it is a verry nervouse dogs, and if it hasn't been properly broken to the things u have mentioned (quads, horses, etc) then it is going into fight or flight mode. If the dog doesn't feel safe/ protected by its owners then it will take on that role it's self as protector. You hit the nail on the head when staying how far will it go, and if it's started biting people already then something needs to be done fast. If it was a stranger and not the farther of the owner that he bit then it would be in a lot of trouble with potential of being euthanised. Clearly needs to be taken to a dog behaviouralist before it's too late. Quote Link to post
paulus 26
needs putting in its place and fast, if they are unable to do this which going by your discription is highly likely, then it needs to go in a hole and the family need to think about a differnt choice of pet, rabbit or cat perhaps as its probable that if they get another dog they will end up back in the same position within 18months. barraboy 28
the bog roll adverts did labs no favours in my view, they are a powerful dog and if you dont get a grip on them early they'll drag you all over on the lead. not all labs are the friendliest dogs in the world that folks assume. my mate has a GSD thats a right softy there's another lad with a black lab that's not keen on strangers touching in her yet if you asked people which they'd prefer to stroke i reckon 90% would chose the lab. i'd say if the lab cannot be sorted by a pro and they are unable to follow his advice then they have very little option, a 70lb dog is a dangerous thing if its not reliable and under control. dont like recommending folk have a dog pts its not a nice thing to do but..... stoaty1 35
the decision to put a dog to sleep should never be lightly made but if there are kids in the equation then its an easy decision to make. At the end of the day the dog just feels an injection and then sleepy. Its humans who bring all the emotional baggage and think the act is worse for the dog than it is. In this case get the dog to a vet to see if its in pain or any reason for it being aggressive. Neutering will not solve this issue by itsself. A bad situation to be in but the owners need to realise what may happen Quote Link to post
Clare 33
to me it sounds like a frustrated dog that is snapping when it reaches breaking point, get the weight of it and give it a job, even my retired girls have jobs, fetching balls from the garden, picking up rubbish (my blacks favourite job ) need to keep the body and mind exercised, the dog could do to be away from the kids while it is assessed and trained as it may not have snapped at them yet but it could be a matter of time I dont agree with PTS I have had two dogs here that were going to be PTS as were showing aggression both have are still with us one now lives in a family home the second a working home, none show aggression Quote Link to post
