I thought it was ok just to nip down ,take a pound of winkles and a crab or 2 if found and be on my merry way.
Millet 4,497
Eye apparently you need a permit these day's in this fooked up country..just another way for the goverment to rip us of..
tegater 789
If you sell them you might, but if its just a few for the pot, like me and the boys get when we go up the west coast, then how can that be right. I bet nobody has ever been stopped in the remote places that we go. Shrimps/prawns are the other thing we get lots of, from the big tidal rockpools, using a shrimping net under all the weed. Delicious flash fried in butter!
shamus 36
not sure about your area but you do not need a permit for winkling in northumberland seafisheries area. Shellfishing,ie.pots/nets is governerd by a permit /pot tagging system but anyone can apply for tags for up to five pots, you are not allowed tosell any of your catch and you are onlyallowed one lobster and five crabs per day. chartpolski 25,388
My brother has fished the north east coast all his life, and regularly collects "willicks", (as we call them, up here), also mussels, and he's never heard of needing a permit. That's not to say they haven't brought one in; just look what they've done to scrap collecting !!! Cheers.
vermin catcher 219
Its not a licence you need here in Northern Ireland, but a fooking great big stick! All the Polish,Romanians Lithuanians have everything fooking hoovered out of everything over here. You cant even catch a decent size pike anymore as them fookers have eaten them.I went to go willick picking a few weeks ago to a wee spot i have went to for years.Thought i was on a foreign holiday instead of my own fooking country!!! There was hoards of them with buckets everywhere, even taking dog whelks and any other thing that slithered or crawled. And not too many were worried about size limits i can tell you,it was all getting tossed into their buckets. if it crawled it was fooked!

I remember having a pint in a bar down round Ardglass and the local lads telling us that someone had wrecked and burnt the vans the immigrants were using to bring them to their picking area. vermin catcher 219
Im all for live and let live and the foreign hoards do work for silly money that most of us would not even entertain so fair play. But i draw the line at my traditional willick picking venue getting mauraded by a bunch of shaven headed neo nazi looking pale faced fookers all with two builders buckets each looking at me as if i didnt belong there. Having said that, most of the women that were with them (also carrying two builders buckets each ) were easy on the eye.Maybe our own Norn Iron girls need to lay of the Ulster fry's and start eating pike or ornamental Koi four times a week washed down with every crustaceon from the Irish sea that can move or wriggle.
