FUJI 17,327
I was Reading about the difference between the Cumbrian Fell pack hounds and those from the Southern Counties earlier on today, the Fell dogs are heavier in bone and much broader in the chest with tighter feet than the lighter framed Southern hound which is quicker as the land they hunts need a dog with that trait..every now and again the Fell packs will add some Southern blood just to keep enough pace in the pack? Just like us lurcher boys if they need an infusion of new blood in their lines then that's exactly what they will do! 1 Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,936
The ground round that way would destroy a lesser dogs feet, bloody tough stuff those hounds. I was at that fair on Sunday and as I said to you at the time Fuji, what amazed me was the lack of game on the hills, you would have to work hard to get sport. Hats off to anyone who works a footpack ! haha thats where all that fell running malarky probably came from,,, nutters, lol ATB 1 Quote Link to post

border lad 1,047
I was led to believe a fox, hunted a 6 mile radius, outer edge to outer edge a 12 mile point, back in newyears day 1990 at Cairnryan Hunt, (( Lady Stairs,Pack))) we done a 12 mile point, on Horse back of course, I led the Hunt I was on a 16-3HH, dapple grey gelding, bought of mr. Frank Gordon, nr Ballina, Co, Mayo, west Ireland, I was a guest to that Hunt that day, all the members, of the Hunt stated it was the best hunt they could Remember,Mr, Taffy Jones, was the Huntsman,(( first class, Huntsman,, if we jumped one fence we jumped at least 40 some small and some very Large, I happened to give a couple whippers in a lead over a stone wall into a wood, both there horses refused to jump I was behind them, which is manners at the hunt, I asked them is it jumpable, and they both said in a resounding yes, so up I come, ready for a big jump,, the jump in was no bother it was the Drop at the other side,we Landed safely, and the whippers in both horses jumped safely as well, the hunt finished around 4 pm, we were at least 14 miles out of Stranraer, darkness falling fast, and I was dreading riding back along the main Euro route with all the very large trucks rushing to catch the ferries,, Lady Stair called for two very Large Horse boxes, and transported us horses and riders back into Stranraer, to our own horse boxes,, A great Hunt a Great day, enjoyed by horses, hounds, and Humans, the Members of that Hunt was genuine and down to Earth as you could find,, every one was together for a good Hunt see hounds work, watch a first class Huntsman, at work, and just enjoy the Freedom of the countryside, with some beautiful views to boot, 3 Quote Link to post

darbo 4,776
been going to the lakes for the last 30 years fell walking, fishing mountain tarns, followed the cumbria beagles and watched foxhounds a time or two. the terrain the foxhounds work on and the stamina they must have is incredible. some of the local blokes are like mountain goats themselves.
