Practise makes Perfect

Recommended Posts

Its been a while since I really got to grips with the MFR . After I met up with Si , I decided that a Hawke Varmint II that had very kindly been put my way , was going on it . Typically the bottle valve o ring went on me straight away , and the supplier is on his holidays !! A good mate on the Rapid forum stepped in and posted me some replacements ( cheers Dave ) and I was back in business .I had though made one change to the gun , and that comes in the shape of a CS 800 thumbhole stock , better suited to me I thought . With the scope and stock in place , I decided the best thing to do was get some hours in , and make sure it was doing what it should be , and I was pointing it where I should lol . Trouble was , it didn't want to play . In fact it took me about 12 mags yesterday to get it anywhere near where it's supposed to be . With the evelation maxed out , it was better to take the whole thing off and start again . So I centred the scope , cleaned the mounts and re mounted the lot . After 2 mags it was spot on , I guess it was one of those things !! . I posted last night and asked Tron is he was going to the HFT this morning because I needed to knock the power down a tad , and have another good couple of hours on the range . Good as gold he replied this morning , and we said we may just catch each other there , but things changed ( as they do ) shortly before I was due to leave . A solicitor who has rabbit troubles , rang and asked if I could go over and see what ' These blasted bunny's are doin to my lawn!! ' Since I've not seen him in a while , and he's good to me ( tells everyone that I'm doing a grand job and has got me a couple of shoots ) I decided its best to keep him sweet and went over ( Sorry Ron , I'll make it up to you lol ) . Got there to see his lawn dotted with scrapes . I assured him I would stay a while and see what I could find . He has a 5 acre field at the back and the buggers frequent the hedgerows , and make good their escape as soon as the gate opens , so I thought a couple of hours plinking will do me just fine . I sat against the barn , to practise sitting shots and to get the ' feel' for the new stock , and at first I found it strange , but as the time went on it became easier . I still need to keep at it, as practise makes perfect , so they say . I had the calibrated ret diagram that Si had done , and with the range finder , decided to see if it was the same with the new set up . Well as mounts and ret were the same it all worked out just right , and before too long I was pushing my limits . It was a good job I had my dive bottle and a couple of tins of pellets , because I used loads !! I must have been at it a good couple of hours and Heather brought me some tea ( she does spoil me ) and mentioned there was a rabbit on the bottom lawn . I thanked her and said I would have a look . With a cross wind going from right to left I was giving it a mill dot to the left and hitting my mark . I got down to the bottom lawn and spotted him , crouching and aware he'd just been seen . The range finder said he was 53 meters away , and to get closer I was facing open lawn . If ide not been at it for most of the weekend I wouldn't have taken the shot , but I had and I did . One mill dot to the right , and one and two thirds hold over . It looked right on the money , I was steady , breathed out and took the shot . He just rolled over , no kick , no twitch , just straight on his side . The noise told me ide hit the 'off switch' and I was quite happy with the shot, start to finish . I walked over and picked him up , well its a Doe actually , and it shot was exactly where I wanted it . A textbook shot , in one side out the other , no mess no fuss , just dead . The pellet had gone straight through her brain and popped her brain . You will see in the pictures how its deformed and the clean exit wound . Even though I've been shooting a while , it does me good to have time on the range , as the old saying goes , practise makes perfect !!! Cheers Bust.

Thanks for the replys guys , its not a post to say `I shoot very well` , its more of a post to remind all of us that when we put in the time we improve our shooting . Im the first to say i dont shoot springers very well , and i also dont make claims that i do things that i cant do . I posted because i was proud of a shot that i made today , after hours of practise , simple . Its obvious that if you put the time in , it pays off . And ive just looked and 53 meters is 57.9 yrds . :gunsmilie:

Keep em peeled next week for the home made NV , and how many misses i make with it
