Hello to all you people on the forums, I need a little help, before the season starts i need/want to work on my dogs recall, He's about 1year old, and is a bull greyhound x collie greyhound, i have had plenty of rabbits with him on my local farmers permission but now he seems to not listen. he gets the smell of something and goes off searching for it, he either comes back with a rabbit or nothing, i have been spending alot of time with him but i really need to work on his recall so he can come in to me straight away, any help, information needed, thanks!

Well, i'd say some dogs are just like that. Mine is good as gold in the house, yard and on dead ground. But the pull of game is just too strong, he will go off on it, but always return, as soon as he is done, and ive accepted thats just how he is. He hunts like feck and for that i cant knock him.

yeah mate mine the same i just carry on lamping and if i see anything i give him a shout and he will go for that and if he misses it he dissappears again just how he is only god and him knows what he gets up to when were out

My dog that hunts on / hunts up is strictly a day dog so it's fine with me

i tride with treats nothing spending more time in the garden with recall did 100% took him out nothing so i bought an e collar from pacdog did the trick for me but if you do in vest in this idea take advice from the manufacturer on the best way to use it atb kev

Thanks, i does listen in the garden, and i get quite worried, because where i go on my permission its a big bog, loads of trees etc,

My bitch walks to heel off the lead day or night, I have to keep her in check every now and again with a sharp "heel" but she does it. She also doesn't run the beam until I tell her to unless the rabbit has got up and is running and then there is nothing that would stop her.

 

She hunts up in the day and goes off to find game, again on command. She will walk to heel if told or go hunt up if I say "get on girl".

 

I didn't train her, only had her a few months. But I would like to have these qualitys in any future dogs I bring on.

my old bull x would never hunt up on the lamp recall was spot on but during the day he was a c@#t for hunting when he got the smell of game and i couldn't stop him just learned to live with it

No, in general, he knows the difference, although, for the first cuple of runs, if it goes into cover, he will try to follow it etc.

theres nothing more annoying than a dog hunting up on the lamp more so when you see everything running for cover and if your with company its even worst knowing your dog is spoiling there night as well thats why unless the recall is sound i wont take the dog till it is that bit extra time training pays in the end

i have seen this a lot in dogs which are allowed to start hunting at a young age, before they have been fully trained. you really need to teach recall and teach it PROPERLY way before you let a dog hunt, because it will quickly learn that there is nothing you can do to compete with the excitement of working. you could learn to live with this, but it obviously bothers you or you wouldnt have put this post up, so i suggest you go back to the very beginning as if he was a little pup and dont let him see anything until he is PERFECT in his recall
