Ideation 8,216
Out of interest, has anyone owned a dog that was bred out of a half x collie / greyhound bitch, lined by a pure whippet? Just wondering on how they threw, what kind of size, and all the usual questions? I'm asking, as i am considering breeding from my lad, in a couple of years, if he continues to develop and improve as he is, an this, i think, may be the way i would go? Quote Link to post
suffolkpoacher 219
Mate had 1 mad about 23tts great rabbit dog lacked a bit of top end for long ears but that was all it was tried on, Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Don't suppose you have any photos mate? I'm not a hare man, so i figured, that quarter grey, would give the dog that bit more top end speed, than my whippet, or at least balance out, what is lost by adding the quarter collie. And the collie would give me a bit more bidability, thicker skin / jacket and a little more durability. Quote Link to post

Thanks for the reply mate, that is a lot of the kind of land that i hunt, where a short, sharp dash is needed, but also the ruggedness, to be able to make such a dash, over shitty ground, and take the odd knock that this entails. It would be predominantly say work, but also i was hoping that the splash of collie, would give that bit more stamina, for a long nights lamping. My lad, isn't too small, about 21.5, so im hoping if i could find the right bitch, i could get a pup that would level out around the 23 " or so mark. Quote Link to post
reddawn 2,173
i was told as a kid nt to run a lurcher with whippet in it, i know its silly an i have probs missed some fun over the years, but its summat thats allways stuck in my head so iv never had 1,i stuck to the greyhoundx's an had fun along the way, the type a dog you mention is an ideal rabbit dog, maybe 1 day ill try 1 Quote Link to post
Sirius 1,391
They often seem to throw smaller dogs from what I have seen. I would personally prefer one with less than half whippet, just enough to keep the size down a touch. Edited July 18, 2012 by Sirius Quote Link to post
darbo 4,776
all my lurchers have had collie in them. 1/2 collie 1/4 collie and so on. i only ferret and mooch these days. the ferreting is mainly in woods and copses etc. when the time comes for a new pup this is a type i would certainly consider. Ideation 8,216
Cheers for all of the replies lads. Red - I've seen some cracking lurchers with whippet in them, and various collie/whippet/greys, but just wondered about this specific breeding. Also, i have what i would class as a good working whippet here, and you dont see many working greys, so i was interested in seeing what it would produce in comparisson to say a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie, from a non working grey. Sirius - Im planning on using my whippet dog (if i do ever do this) and so half whippet is the way it goes, but who knows, if decent, it could be the basis for a further breeding down the line. Jay - would love to see a couple of photos mate. Albert - here's hoping. Quote Link to post
