RABBITTING ON MY BACKYARD & GOLF COURSE PERMISSION'S YESTERDAY

Recommended Posts

As the weather as been so unpredictable, i set the alarm for 04.45 and took pot luck the weather would be fine and it was. so being optimistic i got ready and was out by 05.15, straight out my back gate. walked stealthily up the field heading for the golf course, knowing i would have a chance of a Rabbit on the way. And sure enough just about 60 yards from my back gate i saw 2 Rabbits about 40 yards away but the Rabbits had plenty of cover with clumps of thistles between them and me not offering a shot for me. The horses had followed me up the field as they always have done before, knowing the Rabbits are used to them, i used them as a means to get closer and beyond the thistles. I have used this tactic before and as always worked, i got to 30 yards from the first Bunny and took it with a clean head shot behind the left eye. The other Bunny ran to my left but stopped in a clearing in the thistles offering a shot at 40 yards i took the shot giving it a 1/4 mill dot hold over, just as i had pulled the trigger the Rabbit ducked down and i was over the top then was gone, there was another 3 Rabbits shot off form my right as i walked to the rabbit. I picked up the one i had shot and placed it in a safe place to pick up on my way back, i then cleared the style and headed for the golf course. I got to the Railway crossing to the golf course and accessed the course at the 3rd tee, there is a large warren behind the tee but its very overgrown with weeds. I had a look around but no Rabbits out, so set off behind the second green and followed a trip that runs parallel to the fairway. saw 3 Rabbits along that trip but could not get a shot as the area is overgrown with just a narrow strip through it, heading for the first green that as produced Rabbits before i saw a Rabbit about 100 yards away. I tried to get close to it using a tree that we have sat under before but just as i got to the tree the Rabbit spooked. I decided to sit a while on a log that runs behind the green but it did not show, so i headed back toward the second green and spotted a Rabbit at the side of the green about 40 yards away managed to get 30 yards from it and into the cover of the trees. Taking a rest on a tree to steady my shot and just as i was getting onto the Rabbit a train spooked it and was gone. so i layed down on the second green in Waite but not for long as a golfer came down the fairway to the green so that was it, off home. retrieved the Rabbit in the Paddock behind my home, and that was the end of an enjoyable few early hours out, prospects are now good for that particular area: Dave

That first rabbit looked like it was still alive for a while, it even tried biting the horse from the looks of things. Might just be my crappy screen, also the entry point look like it went in through the eye and out the side of the head or vice versa. Again I'm watching this on 3G so it's grainy and on my phone screen.

Thanks for sharing

The entry point was just behind the eye, but when gutted and skinned i found the pellet lodged in the second vertebrae of its neck, it was slightly at an angle, the horse was actually nuzzling the Rabbit as if trying to revive it sounds daft but I've seen this before with these horses: Dave
