hi everybody.

i would just like to start off and what a great site this is.

i love reading about different aspects of the hunting scene.

I would like to know if anybody here keeps neutered dogs?

I have an amstaff here and im going to get her fixed, but i was told if i got it done before she was over two years old that her bone and body mass would not fully develop. Because of lack of hormones after the operation.

One vet said it wouldn't make a difference but the other vet said it would, if anybody here has any experience in this matter then that would be great.

Thanks,

Hello and welcome. She's not a working dog, but I've got a Rhodesian Ridgeback bitch.

She was "done" just after her first season at about 10 months old, and she's a fair old lump now, so I don't subscribe to that theory at all.

i've heard a few conflicting opinions too, 1 vet told me that if you get the bitch spayed before season 2/3 that there was evidence to suggest that the likelihood of ovarian cancer was reduced, another said that it didn't really make any difference!

both agreed that it was best practice to wait untill after the 1st season, and neither mentioned the risk you stated and the research i did on the net didnt mention that.

i do know that some owners i personally know have incontinence issues with some of the larger breeds following the op, my terrier (pat), has been absolutely fine on that score, but she has put a little weight on which i'm working on getting of her now.

hope all goes well for the bitch

hi jonha.

the people that told me about the bitch not filling out just keep show breeds.

they said that the op would stop or slow down the bone structure.

now, it doesnt matter to me about the showing or working of the dog because she is just a pet.

but i wouldnt like to anything that would have the wrong effect on her.

HI WALSHIE and thanks for the welcome.

do you have to wait for their first heat. she is only 5 months yet.

Hello mate, it was just at the end of her first season. We had her done because she needed a hernia op at the same time and we weren't sure if our older Ridgeback had got her pregnant, so 3 problems solved in 1.

Apparently best to let them have their 1st season if you can.
