Millet 4,497
That's a good hatch Keep's.. ..all i can say on the advise side of thing's from your picture is make sure the chick crumb is not too big for them and use water feeder's that they can't get stuck in and drown for the first several day's.. Moll. 1,770
Lovely big healthy chicks Personally i would not use any sawdust/shavings, leave the floor bare, easier for them to get the crumbs then. Grind the crumbs small if you think they need it, and the water thing as Millet said, i have had them drown in a thimble full! I use the non slip stuff you can buy for under table cloths/ornaments for the floor and make bolster cushions from rolled up tea towels if you get any back flippers. Check their bums daily, depending upon the food you might find their bums get dirty and block...due to the way they squat to poo Cant wait to see what colours you get
Keeps 403
Neither can I Moll, how soon before their colour starts to show? We have got a tiny poultry water drinker for them, so they shouldn't fall in it and have been bashing the chick crumb up so that its smaller, they seem to be eating well from the start, but maybe we should make it even finer. So far they seem to be standing up very well, fingers x they stay that way.. will take on board what youre saying about the shavings though. Thanks for the advice
Millet 4,497
Don't powder it up too much Keep's as they start balling there toe's up in it and it's a right pain trying to pick it of without damaging the nail's.
jasper65 6
cracking hatch keeps . totaly agree with moll and millet, I had chicks in the past includeing quail manage to drown themselves in the smallest amount of water. I never bred them on the scale as millet so I was a bit of a jobsworth and used pebbles in the water to stop them drowning. also used a pestle and mortar to grind down the crumb slightly .... Millet 4,497
Pebble's are what i use in the water Jasper and a food blender for dusting the chick crumb up..
Moll. 1,770
Neither can I Moll, how soon before their colour starts to show? Quite soon, about a week, but the colours they first show may be nothing like what the end up looking like. And even then they can change from one type to a completely different with each moult as adults Edited July 17, 2012 by Moll.
Keeps 403
Can't wait to see what they turn out like. Well I ground up some food last night, blender was easier than using a pestle and mortar, thanks for the tip Millet.... Put a load more chick crumb in last night, and this morning it was almost gone
bobcullen79 1,495
Looking forward to seeing your colours. Ive just bought in a breeding trio of Serama`s, so Im hoping to get some eggs out of them soon for the incubator. Careful blending the crumb, some blenders take in the dust and blow up, Ive seen it happen. I use a carp angling grinder, for boilies and pellet. Does a pretty decent job,and you can just keep opening it to see if its small enough yet. As much as it ckokes me to advertise for them, Korda make them.
