desertbred 5,490
they can go back to work within the week not flat out but eae them back in for a week or so. most bitches put in some good runs just before and just after a seasonal break Edited July 17, 2012 by desertbred Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
Don't rest the bitch, keep her well exercised: steady road trotting, but not loads of mad galloping. Bitches are fine for the first 3-4 weeks straight after a season, but from 6 weeks onwards after the end of the season you will notice mammary glands increasing in size, softening of muscles, general weight increase: this peaks at around the time she would have had pups had she been mated. Some bitches stay soft for a couple of months after this! (The period when they would have been feeding their pups) Others show very little outward signs at all. Heavy build bitches seem to get it worse than lightly built types such as Whippets and and Salukis. Main thing to remember is that they won't perform at their peak while they're like this, so don't run them too hard, but keep up general levels of fitness through regular exercise. 1 Quote Link to post
jonansuki 21
my bitch has just had a litter and she was out up untill bout 1 week before she dropped and when she is in heat over the winter i always run her just try keep it to a night time thing if you do walk her other wise you might end up with a whole field full of dog chasing your bitch ha ha ha Quote Link to post
chartpolski 25,664
If you are unlucky enough to have a 6 monthly bitch, and you give her 3 months off after every season, you're NEVER going to get any work out of her !! My bitches are yearly, but I still work them; yes, their performance drops off slightly, but nothing to worry about. I've done this with every bitch I've had and noticed no adverse affects on their health ! Cheers. Edited July 17, 2012 by chartpolski Quote Link to post
Guest Moscow
The theory is 3 weeks in season, 9 weeks in pup, 4 to 6 weeks rearing of the the pups, so thats at least 16 weeks before you can start to peak the bitch to her best fitness. I Carnt see why a bitch would need 3 months rest after a season, she wont be at her best but that amount of time off resting Quote Link to post
