fireman 11,038
I've got a mixed aviary with a pair of goldies in it and i have had eggs go missing but can't say for sure who it was as i also have other known egg messing finches in there as well in chaffies and lesser redpolls,i just put up with it myself until i see who it is but it's not out of hand.I will add my goldie cock never egg pecked when cage bred and he was allways in with a hen and eggs and chicks but i never saw him feed a chick until it had fledged so wouldn't have reason to blame him anyway. fireman 11,038
Lesser redpolls seem to be a easy enough bird to keep, well mine are and you don't have so much of a worry over going light like you do with greenies.Siskins as well are simple birds and don't want for much really, just the same needs as redpolls but maybe not so much with the live food as the redpolls but i'm only going on what my birds are like and couldn't give you a bigger picture on these types in general. Meroman 105
I reckon goldies & siskins without doubt break eggs and wreck nests, they have a dubious reputation for it but so do chaffies, bullies and other species. In my experience there are a multitude of reasons why the cocks do this. Top of the list is that they are rank/ in tip top condition and break the eggs to drive the hen to nest again, secondly when the hen is sitting they become bored if that is the correct term to use and break up nests or break eggs. If mixed flights are overcrowded with too many pairs bickering can start over nest sites and this is another reason eggs end up smashed. I know of a man who used wheatgerm oil to bring his birds into condition and used too much resulting in the cocks being really aggressive and scalping hens. But sometimes its the hen who may break/eat the eggs due to calcium defiency or some other mineral defiency.
