broonball 38
Its just a sad truth, its an anti-establishment sport! I'm lucky as I'v got permission to ferret a few places. I would never ask for permission to run the dog. The dog is part of the ferreting team 1st and foremost. Once a few rabbits have been taken wi ferret and dog, askin to lamp will be the next question. I also do some shooting wi air rifle to keep the farmer happy and its very easy to explain to them that the rabbits have become wise etc and I can't shoot the bolters from cover, maybe the dog would pick some of them off? Respect your landowner and more permission will come, don't shoot pigeons/pheasant etc if all your permission is on the rabbits.shoot to kill, people don't want to see animals suffer, to me a dog is more humane as its kill or miss. Don't poach until your dog is upto scratch if you need to poach at all! If you gain trust you gain land. I'm new to lurcher work but its common sense lads. Don't cause damage or leave evidence and don't get caught. 6 Quote Link to post
BIG G wheton machine 1,594
the law only applies when caught hahaha i just hate that when any crime that happens in the countryside is automatically blamed on poachers and legit hunters, and unless any proper evidence is produced ill always defend like minded people against the here say bullshit 1 Quote Link to post

I (never) lamped by the house, i even walked a field away from it.! One day walking my lurchers past there house, they saw me and came outside and said they dont like to see a lamp about, as think it could be a( burglar) about . I said if i wanted to break in your house i wouldnt use a 1 millon cp lamp would i as half the village would know as well . She told the farmer and he told me keep away as he didnt want any trouble, so lost that ground through them wankers. Some times you got no chance even if you done nothing wrong, but every dog as its day as they say, and i will get them back somehow. Quote Link to post

morton 5,368
The fact of life is,there are and have always been a certain type of person, wether they own a lurcher or not is irrelevant, that have and always will be criminals,of one sort or another. Some of the earliest poachers were the scum of the earth, while the minority poached game to feed a starving family, the rest did it to line there pockets, the unfortunates that stood in their way paid an hefty price. When people now try and make out they poach for some romantic and misguided reason,i admire their ignorance and naivety. The main people that are accountable for mainly rural crime, that take a lurcher, lamp, terrier or ferret along,to cover their main purpose of being out and about, are not and never will be hunters, just criminals disguised as one. 1 Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,751
If you are out mooching about in the countryside with a lurcher folks tend to ask one of two things, "You're not coursing are you!?" or "Have ya had many mate?". I repond to both the same way, with a puzzled look. Lol. Everybody knows why countrymen keep lurchers, we can't escape that. The worlds a very different place to what it was 50 years ago. All fieldsports have to adapt to deal with the new challenges that face them. Undoubtably one of the biggest challenges to the future of lurcherwork is the wave of unsporting bloodthirsty hard men that have little interest in the culture and traditions of the countryside or the natural world, it's just there for them to smash into and terrorise whatever is in their path. How do we deal with this when it appears that so many are of this type? It's gonna get worse before it gets better.... Quote Link to post

Origionally, surely most folk were poachers, as the laws prohibited any common man (ground game laws etc) from hunting, or in one case, owning a running dog (hence creation of the lurcher), obviously there were a minority of organised criminals, etc. The biggest issue we face was that the ban managed to attract a huge flood of bell ends to all forms of dog work, it's a sad fact that there are a f**k ton of proper scum that now have working dogs, just because they like killing stuff, its illegal, they think it makes them look hard etc. Obviously when these kind of folk get the chance, they usually do other shotty stuff, like stealing farm machinery etc. 1 Quote Link to post
