Problem is, we have a boxer that hasn't been tested that much (Fury), a gobshite who can box but embarrasses the nation in the process of losing (Haye), and Chisora. So all in all not much to be proud of. I respect all boxers for the discipline and determination they have, but you need something else when you reach the top and I can't see it. All they seem to care about is money, whereas I want to see another British boxing idol that young lads can emulate and we can all be proud of. Its worth keeping in mind this country went near 100 years without a world heavyweight champion................so to have 4 all at and around world level.......we really shouldnt be moaning. It's what you do when you're there that matters to me These are the times we live in mate fighters have to promote themself and create an image.......nobody likes it but its the way it is now.....look at Ricky Hatton,i actually prefer the way Haye/Chisora go about promoting themself than him....at least theres is up front and in your face they,re not trying to worm there way into folks good books by being " one of the lads "........Ricky Hatton was the very best at doing what Haye and Chisora are doing only he did it very cleverly by playing on our national weakness.......we love a " one of the lads,pint and a pie " carry on........i found Hatton a f****n embarassment.......if making a joke out of being a fat overweight undisciplined fool can drum up support for a fighter like it did with Hatton it gives a good indication of where we,re at as a nation of sports fans. Klichkos are different personailities we cant expect everyone to be the same......yes Haye/Chisora are unsavioury characters but should we care....... Nigel Benn was far from Mother Theresa but we didnt care because in the ring he thrilled and excited us......and thats how it should be. Without doubt he,s a pumped up cruiserweight....but then so was Holyfield and he didnt do too bad.............i doubt Haye would of got as far as he has in any other generation,no problem with his punching power he has good timing and sees the shots early...............my doubts with a fighter like Haye is his fighting heart ive said for years now i dont think fighters on average have the same level of guts/gameness call it what you will,as they did in years gone by..............i suppose we,re all guilty of thinking it was better in our own era,the " good old days " .........but i genuinely believe theres fighters out there Haye,Khan etc who definately have quit in them its just that their supreme fitness means we never get to see it...................years ago fighters had proper gym wars where they would need to prove they can be in the trenches,meaning you knew when their back was against the wall in a competetive fight they had that in their locker.....................todays fighters are so supremely fit they dont necessarily need that same level of gameness look how much Khan still has in the tank at the end of a 12 round fight....same with Haye............not to take away from their ability..............but with todays conditioning i dont think 12 rounds asks the same questions of a fighters insides as it did years ago,hence a fighter like Haye can make it on pure ability in todays times. Rothman had outclassed, pounded and humiliated Thomson when he pulled this out of the bag. It's difficult to identify any modern fighters with the mental strength previous generations of boxers had. Have to agree about Gnash's other point about Ricky Hatton. Because he led with his chin, rushed at opponents, and blew up between fights, the British public took him to their hearts.
