Dave N 9
Listen guys, I ain't saying no deerhounds work or doxhope ain't any good, what I am saying they are designed to work on hill ground and there is no point in using a pure deerhound for anything else than hill ground. I would be very surprised if any pure deerhound in the uk could out match a good lurcher at it's job, they won't get near a beddy/whippet for rabbits or a saluki type on hares they even struggle on lowland deer compared to lurchers. I am a deerhound fan but I am realistic at the same time, good fun but will always come up short unless used on the hill. There are a few that still get worked kicking about and fair play, some people in love with the breed and work them because they own them and not because they picked them specially for that type of work. 1 Quote Link to post

chartpolski 23,605
There were a handfull of Deerhounds at a show recently, and, although I'm a fan of Deerhounds, these looked as though they would struggle to catch ANYTHING ! I have a first cross, (Doxhope Knights Errant x Rivington Ena), and in my mind she is not far off what I think Pure Deerhounds should look like. The Pures have mostly been spoiled by th KC, and some now resemble Wolfhounds !! I hope there are still some working type pure Deerhounds around, as they have a lot to offer Lurcher breeding. But as long as the first crosses are worked and bred correctly, we should be OK for Deerhound blooded Lurchers ! Cheers. 4 Quote Link to post

birddog 1,354
i'm a fan of the deerhound, one of my bitches is a deerhound cross, i agree that the kc guys have not done the breed any favours but my understanding of many of the old books and descriptions of the dogs used by early stalkers and hunters they seem to be what we would call a deerhound lurcher with generous dollops of collie or foxhound in the mix (both breeds renowned for their stamina) not gigantic ungainly types or racy coursing types either 1 Quote Link to post
