Also it can be unnerving, standing in a wood or forest, no sign of the dog for 10. . . . 15. . . . 20 mins, and you just have to stand and wait, or listen for the crashing. paulus 26 Posted July 12, 2012 Report Share Posted July 12, 2012 Just my take on it, but i'd say that, my whippet won't compete with a true cover dog when it comes to bushing out rabbits from cover, but wil compete with any running dog / lurcher at marking cver, pushing stuff out and catching in cover etc. No running dog will equal a terrier / spaniel / hound though. would you like to par take in a small wager Yep. Now i'm not saying a good cover working lurcher wont beat a pot licker. But the best cover lurcher you can find vs the best spaniel i can find. . . . . I'd definatly whack some money on that. I've had this argument a milion times, but i'm teling you now, a top spaniel will empty cover faster and work it harder than a runner, it's just about the build, and work style etc etc etc. he thing is, i have a lurcher here that spent the first 4 years of his life on a commercial shoot were over ,000 birds (partride,duck and pheasent) are put down each season he worked with a team of springers from a pup day in day out, he will quater a wood in front of you and work to hand signals aswell as push through cover like a train. he will work in the beating line and pick up, he is as happy to work to the gun as he is to the lamp. no he is never going to compare with the top of the run spaniel, but for a dog of 25inch you would not believe were he can get, the main difference is style of working between the 2 where as a spaniel will be in cover looking for sent the lurcher will follow scent into cover. unless your in a wood or thick spinny then they hunt much the same. We really DO need to meet up for a mooch soon, i'm flat out on the shoot at the moment, but soon! You should come over here. R.E the whippet, if its just bushing, get a terrier or something. If its a bit of everything, then probably a small lurcher. If you like whippets, get one. Thats about the sum of it. Mine does me, i can take him ferreting, he will now do a decent enough shift on the lamp, although can be a little git, and hes great for general mooching about. His work ethic is second to none and he makes any walk exciting, and will have a pop at most things that get up, even if he is stupidy over matched, and has taken most stuff i have let him have a go at. Like Jamie has said, ive had some bad bangs, but then im in no way sensibe in where or what i run him on. i jai well sort something, And I think Finn sets the bench mark very high for whippets so I find him a fitting example lol he's a very good dog, nose like a beagle. Least you know with him if there's game there to find he will find it for you. One thing to clarify I'm not saying jais dog has bad skin as the places he's worked Finn at times is very rough ground and can test even my sturdy first x collie/grey who has come away with tears from there aswell But as work ethic goes he's up there at the top and will work cover well Wales1234 maybe if jai doesnt mind we could all meet up and you could see finn in the flesh. I`ve seen whippets work cover etc, and tbh every time I see it go in I expect it to get torn up. No whippet will work cover like my cocker, no chance,, he barges through bramble that you could walk on top of. 1 Quote Link to post

weezel5 2 Posted July 13, 2012 Report Share Posted July 13, 2012 I have 2 whippets dog an a bitch the bitch is only 11 month an 3 days ago she found a rabbit under a bush in park it was just like a shrub so now when iv been mooching in the woods an near thick brambels iv been incouragein her in them an theres no stoppin her shes straite in now its grate but on the other hand my dog wont even entertain going in he just runs round like a mad one looking for her an the rabbits lol Quote Link to post
