Not having a dig at you mate, but i've been homeless split up with lass and i still kept my dogs, so its no excuse for me. guns and other bits and bobs can go as you can always go out and buy the sam

My "pretentious" remark was about you "never giving a trial" and only dealing with "reputable dog men".   You don't have to give someone a dog for a week, simply take them out and let them see it wo

Agree with alot of this thread. If you want a hound to perform you do the research. Who is going to believe forum postings these days? Not me without a bit of homework.

It's also tough to find good homes for pups - you do wonder why folks breed so indiscriminately ( meep sp)

Taking a hound into your pack is not about searching on ebay or amazon.

Soo tempted to add link to fake ebay shop for salukis.......Amazon don't ship from here :whistling:

Morton, youve hit the nail right on the head, the problem is some people dont know any better and buy off them, not everybody knows a decent dog man who cares more about his animals than £££s.This forum is a good starting point for them, but even in the comparatively short time ive been on here ive seen lads getting started being given loads of constructive advice ,re.diet, housing, training etc, even gifted pups, days out aswell, only to see them 6-8 months later "selling up"its a wonder people try and help anybody, its a vicious circle.ATB Dave

if everybody did it this way, there would be no need for a dog/pup selling section on here, which i for one would love to see gone, however as you say people loose interest commitment ect as in most sports/hobbies, in the shooting industry this fuels the secondhand gun market. and there in lies the problem, a dog is a living breathing creature not an inanimate object like an air rifle that can sold or swopped as times and fashions change. i honestly believe if you get a dog you should ultimatly be responsible for the dog from the day you aquire it to the day it goes into the ground nomatter how long that is be it 2yrs or 15yrs. if you dont like this level of commitment then dont get a dog.

I'm sure your on about the same page that i look at all the time on facebook..It makes me sick..

all the bullshit on their, new baby so i can't have 2 lurchers, moving house, to many dogs so i have to get rid, me and my lass has split up , so have to get rid..LOL well not of that washers with me,, because i could never get rid of my dogs and none of them things stated is an excuse..

then we've got the people just breeding and breeding for money...real lads will just keep what the need and gift them to mates and people they can trust, and the left overs well I know what i'd rather do than have any pup i breed been passed around..but then i give a f**k

Probably mate there are a few, I came of most of those groups within days of joining them as realised was not going to be of benefit in any way to me. Some are not too bad but it just depends who is looking after them. And since most groups allowed all members to be listed publicly I figured it would be too easy for some do gooder to go on a print off a big list of all the members names...

somethings going to change soon, just look at all the dogs in the homes!

I don't want new laws made up about keeping dogs but it maybe for the better,,

I was thinking something, like you buy a pup its chipped and other forms of id its in your name for its life..you can be the only owner, so if you want rid its a trip to the vets for you and the dog..then people would get dogs put the time in and not pass them on.. It needs a lot more thinking and planning to get right but something needs done!

Or say if you really need to get rid make it £300 to change names..but still in my eyes their never a reason to get rid. as i stated in my above post..last things to go wold be my dogs..even if i had to live in a tent they would be with me!

I have to disagree with you on that last bit mate. There are sometimes real genuine reasons to get a dog rehomed. Sometimes circumstances are so bad, different or out of their hands that a dog has to be rehomed.

Of course there can be circumstances where it makes sense to get rid of them. but for me I cant understand what those circumstances would be. I spent last season paralysed/bed ridden in hospital and the earlier start of this year learning to walk again and the worst my dogs got was fat from not being walked enough.

Everyones situations are different and yes some extreme things happen in life where everything needs to be put on hold but the issue is more those that get bored and move dogs on every month when the 'next best thing' comes along.

the problem is lads see good dogs and want the same, but want it now, without putting the work in, so they buy in dogs advertised as this and that, that are doomed to failure from the start and so get chucked back on the merrygo round of ever decreasing knowledge and care. :cray:

thats pretty much spot on that paulus, imo another thing is alot of folk dont seem to realise how much time effort and patients are needed to be put into a dog to get it upto a high standard.

There was an interesting debate on Radio 2 the other day, about why society is going down hill so fast: part of the problem, as the debaters saw it, was this need to be 'important' in the eyes of one's peers. The 'look at me' sickness. When ( and please don't laugh too much :tongue2: ) many years ago, I wor a lass, life was more about what you were on the inside, how you developed as a well-rounded individual, rather than today's incessant need to 'appear' beautiful or exciting. Apparently, 30% of American teenagers really believe they will one day be famous: pretty tragic, if fame is the only reason for existence.

But I feel it goes deeper than this need for fame: with no solid core of self esteem, or values with which to live by, people just flit from one thing to the next, desperately seeking either acceptance or thrills in life. Dogs have become accessories to either decorate or lighten an otherwise meaningless existence.

There's a really good article in this months EDRD about needing to serve an apprenticeship in hunting and dogs. How many kids these days would actually bother to complete a badly paid apprenticeship of any sort? Instead of the motto Try Before you Buy, it is now the other way round, with people buying willy-nilly without due care or knowledge, then getting rid of a dog when the reality doesn't fit the dream of being a 'hunter'.

Most ov the people selling these dogs do not work and must think its a way to make money, well there mistaken

I was talken to a local lad the other day he bought a bull whippet a week after her last pup was sold (the dog is 14 month old) so she was lined on her first season. The lad who bought her give £40 and a washing machine.....

Sure the collie whippet I have here was bred from before I bought her, she was still in milk and he told me shes 18mths (although I think shes younger), shes such a nice little thing I couldnt leave her with that fool and shes only starting to get fit now. Shes showing good signs re; coney and hopefully will be handy to have around this season

i do a bit of writeing for countrysports and dog magazines and admin the lurchers ireland page on facebook and i agree with what people are saying if someone has a problem the first thing lads say is sell it, with a bit of time most problems can be solved, it then causes problems for lads genuinely selling dogs because they get tarred with the same brush, i personally never give a trial if i am selling a dog if the buyer cant take my word i wouldnt deal with them, but i only deal with reputable dog men, the problems with buying dogs off lads that know nothing about dogs is they dont know enough to be able judge a dog and what it is capable of, the dog might make a great dog in the right hands
