Moll. 1,770
My dad saw some small bantams that apparently are the size of quail, but I couldn't find them at the show as he wanted to see if he could get one to sit the quail eggs..( can't you tell I'm new to this) Sound like Serama (smallest chickens in the world) The Serama cock birds are not too loud but it does vary. Being small birds a lot of people keep them in urban gardens the way they get around early morning cock crows is to bring the cock birds indoors at night, put them in a cat carrier with a blanket over and put them in a cupboard, put them back out at an acceptable time in the morning. Supposedly the birds get used to this routine. I have up to 8 cock birds in my garden, my open bedroom window is at ground floor level and faces the garden, i lock them into their coops on a night time and they never wake me in the morning. The only time they do is if i have forgotten to shut one of the coops. Chickens will not normally brood quail chicks, they know the difference. The only time i have ever had bad smells from the hens is when i had some in houses with UNcovered runs. Roofs sorted that problem. It does not take 10 seconds to quickly shovel up poo from inside the house every day. As for convincing your Mrs....Serama have to be the friendliest chicken breed in the world, they will actively seek out your company to the point of 'moving in' with you if they get the chance. The cock birds remind me of terriers, they think they are 10ft tall and "Who da man, Am da man" attitude, but friendly with it. And they come in a silkied variety Only downside is, they are not massive layers and it takes 3 of their eggs to make up one normal hens egg.
