storm323 191
It would be a worry but pleanty of ferreting with longnet and day time longnetting should do it,do you think they would work with the nets or just run the field?i will give it a go this season but towards the end she will need pleanty of practice with the longnets in the daytime and i think il be doing pleanty of trips out without any succses but if its gonna happend it wont be over night. storm323 191
ye thats the big question obviously the dog would run a rabbits and try catching it then retrive it which thats what lamping dogs know but pleanty of practice and the right fields at the start i.e a field where the rabbits hopefully will run all the same way and as sed i dont think you would want a spot thats crawling with rabbits either to start your twos and threes would be ideal id say. bunnys 1,228
The idea of training a dog for the longnet appealled to me many moons ago, but as the years have gone by i realised im doing ok as i am (by myself or one other).does such a dog exist..maybe, id love to walk out with one if anyone genuinely has one (ill provide the land). iv also toyed with the idea of trying to train a dog up for the task i as i have said elsewhere have used a lurcher now ana gain to clear crop fields whilst netting, but i dont think a lurcher could be trained to e a night time netting dog, or atleast not by me lol i have a few border collies close to hand that i could try it with, but i have just never got round to it, maybe day... lets make ths thread a bit more practicall, an lets hear what yous guys would/or do expect from a dog that works at night with long nets, not a days ferreting with long nets surley carnt be that difficult as long as the net is in the correct place and the dog understands where and what the net is then bobs your uncle, be interesting to see if anyone does it though, would make you lurcher hunt up off the lamp quick though  bit more to it than that tho aint there lol 1st off my lurchers wouldnt do the job, they too highly driven, they understand nets an will work with them during the day pushing bunnys into them an hoppin the nets, that just come fae a load a practise during the season, but to ask a dog to sit patiently whilst ye set your nets, then to ask a dog to go an walk in the land you want done, without paying too much attention to 1 rabbit in particular, an instead more concenrateing on covering the land an getting them all shifted, then to have it sit by you again whilst you chin an deal with the bunnys in net, an all in a nice clam steady manner lol then its time to move onto the next spot an do it all again, id love to see 1 in action an am seriously thinking about making some time to fetch marley the blue merle collie on an see if he will work the nets, what i got to lose, apart from a lot of time getting the dog out the net interesting topic red how about the spaniel , cocker would do fine i would think or hybrid collie spaniel atb bunnys. reddawn 2,173
a dog capable of doin that job would surely earn his crust that for sure, especially in places where the nets take a fair amount of rabbits, i think there are a few crosses tha could do the job, an after seeing the lab/collies i know them sorts of crosses are capable of a lot more than we think Quote Link to post

storm323 191
ye try using a fake net my dog isnt a dog that will smash into anything and other lamp she aint a dog that will smash into cover shes not 100% commited on bunnies and thats why i feel she could do ok on the nets ye you gotta think about these thing lol ive always been interested in and allround rabbit dog and this could be a good place to start manly for me than the dog if she fails she will still be used on the lamp and ferreting . Mick C. 229
If youve got 150yards down and the field is ten times that width there could be a problem I cant see how the dog will work within the boundarys that have been inroduced by the length of net. Smaller sheep meshed fields are a more benefical option. Personally i think the rest of the criteria for a net dog are all within the scope of a man that has a need and the will but most importantly the knowledge to perfect this somewhat romantic method. There are easier ways The attraction must be in the difficulty. Numbers of rabbits caught must be secondary Quote Link to post
