Really yummy treats, lots of fuss and keep your cool, I used to play hide and seek with pups but dont know if thats advisable with a lurcher as I think they need a certain level of independance. skycat 6,173
You have to put yourself in the pup's shoes: why should he come to you just because you tell him to? Salukis especially seem almost feral as pups; cat-like. They don't have that same domesticated attitude as most other types of dog. There has already been loads of good advice on here so I won't repeat it, apart from to say that you do need a different attitude when training this type of dog. They are not for everyone, and you need a lot of patience, as well as the ability to look at things from an animal's point of view. There has to be something in it for him, for him to want to come to you: whether that is food, praise (which, incidentally, you need to teach him to appreciate: not always easy), or a furry toy to chase and grab on to. Make it really worth his while to come to you. Find the key to the individual dog. Yes, he'll test you over and over again, and one day you may need to be bossy with him, but for the moment he's a pup, and building trust is the most important thing you can do. Hide and seek is great: does nothing to change their independence, because all dogs like to play: its in canine nature to play: predators love playing hunting games, and if you are the 'prey' it can make them feel really good about themselves when they find you: just like running away from a pup stimulates the chase instinct: then have a great game of rough and tumble (though gently with Saluki types) when the pup gets to you.
