What if you have a young sapling to start and if falls of age in the summer ? Do you hang on until winter and possibly waste a couple of months with it, but at least you wont be a summer hunter or do you get the pup out on some green rabbits and get it some valuable experience and be branded a summer hunter ? Now am not talking vast hauls here, just a couple of spins to get your pup going. Which would you do ? Whats your thoughts on this gents ? Cheers Atb

i will second that i have just gained some permission last week and the farmers wanting instant results so summer hunter or not i will be out with the young dog in the next few nights or i could end up loosing a good spot to work my dog in the winter

good point , if its just to knock few over 3-4 young rabbits in the lamp for a young pup, carnt see it no harm in it. Its not like killing 20 odd is it.? And lot of green rabbits will get taken by foxes or hawks anyway, so 3-4 rabbits aint going to dent the rabbit population.! But if (supposedly) pest control , a dog like Bryn or a rifle would knock a big hole in the summer rabbit population

Work for my pal who is part of a nationwide company, but he does from the top of north yorkshire up to berwick and over carlisle, so normally have plenty of work on

not problem to bring a pup on young rabbits or milky does ,just dont over do it or you wont have any sport in winter ,the fox and mixy will see to that

i have allways fetched young dogs on through the summer on the lamp good for them easy kills and if i am called a summer hunter so be it .as long as the dog is right for the winter who is the fool the man waiting for winter to start his dog on hard rabbits or the man whos dog is allready doing its job and a good few months in front of the dog which as been held back atb troter

Absolutely nothing wrong with giving a pup a few easy'uns in the summer ! But I'd have to question your statement about "wasting a couple of months". A decent dog could give you 6,7, or even 8 seasons of graft, so you'd hardly be wasting a few months at the beggining of it's career.

I shoot all summer long because if I didnt I wouldn't have a farm to shoot ferret and run the dogs on. I dont enjoy shooting young rabbits but it feeds my dogs and keeps Farmer Piles happy.

I maybe put that wrong charts, i am in certainly no rush to enter a pup and as you say, you get many seasons with them. I just meant it wont do them any harm if there old and capable enough to get a few spins on the lamp mate that's all Cheers Atb

 

Here,s my mates pup and we have had him out a few times summer lamping with a few bunnies and a pigeon under his belt. Nothing serious just a couple of runs to give him some much needed experience

their seems to be alot of summer hunters totally ignorant to the fact that killing young and pregnant rabbits is not sport and not something to be proud of, the internet is full of these lads with cub foxes and pregnant hares seemingly unaware of seasons or anything about lurchers, and before these lads trot out the excuses their permission is overrun, what were they doing all winter and its only the odd occasion pest control is needed in the summer but its a way of life to these lads

there is no season for foxes its all year round was out this morning and had to get rid of a fox that had taken 17 hens in the last couple of weeks

If your under pressure to produce the goods, for example pest controll or your permission desperately needs numbers reduced then your going to do just that no matter what time of the year it is. If you don't then somebody else will.

 

I ferret, and in the summer it's a bastardd with all the young about. Ferrets lie up and digging every time you enter a ferret soon makes you realise 'fcuk this'..... So I don't do it, strictly September- April and even make that October- feb/march.

 

If you have youngsters to bring on and respect the quarry then I can't see the harm in it.
