I agree with a lot of whats being said,there are a lot of guys out there that dont care about the breeding season and ruining the sport for the winter months .But as some one with a lot of permission from many farmers i can tell you .If a farmer sees loads of rabbits in his field especially now with all the young knocking about and he calls you in to thin them out the last thing he ever wants you to say is "Sorry mate its the breeding season" " i like them to breed all summer and eat your nice crops so i can hunt them in the winter when you have fook all growing in your fields". This time of year a farmer sees rabbits, and plenty of them he dosn't want to hear "but they are young or pregnant", he wants you to say ill be up Tonight with the dogs.Common sense has to prevail lads in these circumstances ,if you have land that the farmer isnt too bothered about ,certainly leave it to restock over the summer.But take it from me if a farmer heres the words im letting them alone to breed all summer kiss your permission goodbye and them give him my number

the long grass is a bit of a pain as it makes your legs itch.

Its nothing to do with me what other lads do, I couldn't care less.

 

To say that hunting rabbits this time of year means none in winter is not accurate at all, sure you may educate them to the lamp by the season starts ,but its a well known fact that the least effective time to control rabbits is Summer.

 

The rabbits will compensate for the losses by breeding more youngsters. Also last year on my land by the middle of winter most the rabbit population disappeared due to disease almost over night so I wished I'd had more sport at harvest time.

I respect seasons 100% with regards to ferreting and lamping.

 

But I'm bringing a pup on and once or twice at adult prey with selected runs in the next few months isn't going to damage the population.

 

I agree, people are relentless and don't give them a chance to recuperate and breed.

breeding season:::.´summer sport . rabbits are breeding all year round these days.. so if they want to controll them all year round its there buisness.

 

if it comes in shitty ill get the lamp out and give the dogs a few runs .i dont think theres any harm in it whatsoever.

when i am out and about with the dogs i see a lot of stuff give my bitch a run now and then dont thing i am f..cing it up come

winter lot of rabbit will be gone off mixi not the dogs few weeks ago seen about 10 or 11 in one field give her one little run no harm do

Half the so called hunters from about here only hunt in the summer the other half hunt all year round

This topic is allways coming up; and usualy breaks down into two camps ; Those who say it's killing our own sport, ( yet I know for a FACT that there are people who condemn summer hunting, but do it THEMSELVES !!); and those who say they HAVE to do it, as they are Pest Controllers, (by heck, there must be a lot of "Pest Controllers" around !! LOL !!). As has been said, if they had did their job during the winter, they wouldn't be getting "call outs" in the summer ! At the end of the day, if your dog puts up a rabbit when out for a walk, it ISN'T "hunting", if you go out with your lamp or go walking the fens, it IS "hunting" !!

depends what you call hunting, i give my dogs at least an hour a day mooching over the fields aswell as 2 miles on the roads, yes they do occasionally catch when mooching and are always hunting but to me its just excercise not proper hunting :laugh:

I rarely , if at all, go out in the summer. If I come across a new permission then I will just to get the job done and maybe keep the place for winter.

If the dogs catch while out walking , then so be it.

 

Another thing, EVRYBODY did it when the were a kid and didn`t know any better, but surely ,rather than slag 13yr olds off on here, it would have been better to say hiya, and explain to them that there is a better way of doing it.

What if you have a young sapling to start and if falls of age in the summer ? Do you hang on until winter and possibly waste a couple of months with it, but at least you wont be a summer hunter or do you get the pup out on some green rabbits and get it some valuable experience and be branded a summer hunter ? Now am not talking vast hauls here, just a couple of spins to get your pup going. Which would you do ? Whats your thoughts on this gents ? Cheers Atb
