Range

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, would like your views on the range you would take rabbits with a sub 12ft,lbs air rifle, now im happy with my groupings on paper at 40 yards and can still group 1/2inch at 60 with a bipod. However i always get alarmed when i hear people taking 60-70 yard shots i feel its not responsible shooting due to the affects of wind and other variables, this may just be down to my military training and experiance. what do you guys think??

Each individual should be responsible for their shooting, if you know you cant hit a target at 60yards you shouldn't be trying it, but if you can do it on paper (paper is a must first) then i cant see

Bit offensive telling an infantry lad to stick to potatoes and paper, 25 - yrd rabbits dont come close to the power behind the rifles used on tour at larger targets in wind!

Ummm I must be one of the irresponsible shooters then mate, sorry .   I must have had different military training from you though .   I killed a woody today clean out on camera with a highly tun

Personally the max for me has been a 50 yard kill, normally go for 30 to 40 yard though as that's what I feel confident with.

I have seen 80 yard shots from some members on here. If you can hit the mark then the pellet still has enough knock down power.

I killed a woody today clean out on camera with a highly tuned HW97KT springer further than the ranges you have stated there.

If you can then why not?

Thanks Marty bud.

Just up loading footage from today.

It should be ready in the morning.

Was out with the stage 2 tuned HW97KT today

OMG its awesome.

I shot a 22 shot group in .22 calibre, on camera at 26 metres and 19 went in a group smaller than a 5p piece :icon_eek:.

Try doing that with a .22 pcp and you will find it hard mate at that range.

Shot a 3 shot group and it was the size of just 1 pellet at 26 metres as well.

Shot a playing card side ways on at 26 metres in 1 shot too :boogy::icon_eek: .

What more can i say?

My longest kill was a 45 yards squirrel in near enough perfect conditions.

On paper about 50-55 yards is longest range for me at the mo but practice makes perfect...

I personaly try always to get as close as possible.but each to their own, and as has been said already.. if you know you can do it at longer ranges then why not?! Some top shooters on here who practice a lot and i dont doubt that they could kill cleanly at 80 + yards in the right conditions

if you can hit a kill zone at 60-70 yards CONSITANTLY then there's no problem at all.

Firstly may i welcome you into the forum's clutches, and may i say personally it's nice to have another military person on board. You don't say wheather you shoot a springer or a PCP, although some shooters are able to shoot both equally as well, a PCP is easier to shoot that accurate. If you look on You-Tube you will see lots of people taking vermin at 60 yards easily, so it is now down to how far you are happy to shoot at. As you say in you post that you are able to get a half inch group at 60 yards (which is really good), but you feel uneasy with taking a kill shot at that distance then don't. But there are lots of shooters that are able to do the same grouping as you and are happy and confident to take a kill shot at that range.

Now i am least like a member of Her Majesties Armed Forces being old and fat with knackered this and that, but even i has had my shooting improved by watching, listening to lots of people on this forum some of which have been in the armed forces others not. Personally i have not been shooting that long (this time) or even a member of this forum to know if everybody has learnt from a couple of people or they have been self-taught. But i know my limits when it comes to shooting and will not take the shot. Hope you find the forum helpful and enjoyable.

Have you seen that we have a meeting (gathering of like-minded) on 5,6,7, October 2012. It is always a cracking time with lots of laughs with various shooting challenges over the weekend. Would like to meet you and put a face to the nick-name and you never know, you might even enjoy yourself.

My most recent long range shot was a large buck rabbit on a golf course. My shooting buddy had lased the range which came back as 69 yards. It was a beautiful summers eveing without a cloud in the sky and a very low 2-4 mph wind left to right. I had just done some range work and knew my aiming points on my hawke sidewinders mildots. The rabbit was with his back to me with the bulk of his body hidden by a slight hill in the ground, looking to his left. so when i got into the prone position on the bipod all i could see was his head. I calmly took a shoot, but just saw a glint of the pellet sale over the rabbits head, luckily at that range the rabbit did'nt hear a thing. My second shot, with a slight adjustment for the wind and elevation, landed with a solid crack. As the pellet impacted, the rabbit slumped out of view, just as my shooting buddy was standing and could see the rabbit liying motionless to say 'you got it'. On retrieving the rabbit, the pellet had, as expected, drifted slightly to the right and hit the rabbit at the base of his ear. That rabbit was dead instantly. Infact, if you look closely at my avatar, it's the largest one i had that night (in the picture, closest to the rifle) and all of the smaller ones were also dispatched with precision headshots at ranges between 30-40 yards and most gave a flick or kick of the leg or two.

This shot was taken with a Hw100T pushing 11.43 with AA fields in .177, with a Hawke sidewinder @ 8 mag on the bipod. I would'nt have taken that shot standing, as i know i don't have the skill. What that shot taught me is that my kit is cabable to carry out humane kills out to 70 yards (and possibly beyond) but my skill level is not. Only in certain circumstances and conditions would i take a shot like that. I think as adult shooters, we are selves with a healthy respect for our quarry should be able to judge (with plenty of practice) what our most effective range is.

The photo attached is the 69 yarder.

Just my thoughts.

All the best.
