oakey 57
Been using airguns all my life (im over 50 now ) always had springers all BSA cadet major / meteor /mercury /airsporter s / now ive gone to pcp ultra multi shot and out of all the guns i have ever shot this is the best sporter with out doubt its performance is close to the fienwerkbaiu 300 that i used for bell target many years ago . A mate came to me the other day asking my opinion on a £300 budget gun to use in his garden but he says he doesn't want "the hassle of bottles and pumps nor a springer " ive come to a opinion that the only option is a gas ram but ive never had one so how can i recommend that ?please help as you can see im no expert but i would like to give him a good idea . PS he is going to shoot live quarry so i think a multi pump is out Quote Link to post
Phantom 631
A gas ram is also a spring piston the gas being compressed, the piston being forced forward as the gas expands. They are either a break barrel or an underlever to cock it, just like a springer. They recoil much like a springer but it's faster and there is no sideways twist that a springer produces. Just the forward and back recoil. Tony Quote Link to post
Flow 18
I know he said he didn't want a springer, but, £311 buys him a new HW97K from here http://www.sportsman...EIHRAUCH HW97K/ including postage Edited July 3, 2012 by Flow Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
Id advise him to buy a Weihrauch HW95K or has Flow as said a Weihrauch HW97K mate. They will do everything your gas ram will at a cheaper price and they will last a life time if well looked after. Si. Quote Link to post
Probuk 93
Im not keen on spring rifles for hunting these days myself, reason being ..if you get bad shot on a live animal you at least get a second shot to finnish the job. With rabbit's i try get them at least 3 or 4 meter's away from the hedge or burrow. The added distance give me that time to reload and get the second shot off before..if wounded rabbit get's to a place it cant be reached to be dispatched. Springer for target PCP for hunting & Target Quote Link to post

Smokey 1 56
Not quite in his price range but a FX Independant might fit the bill Smokey Quote Link to post

To be honest i wouldnt want to pick up a spring rifle and go hunting with it, there would be rabbits limping all over the place the next day, and i couldnt be bother target shooting to get the practice needed to get use to it again. If you read BASC air rifle section a single shot rifle isnt really suitable for hunting..sorry to point it out but there you go. Just an honest opinion Lewis...no offence ment against spring rifle users. Edited July 3, 2012 by Probuk Quote Link to post
Flow 18
If you don't have the skill to shoot a recoiling rifle then a PCP would be best, but to suggest everyone should use a multi shot PCP for hunting is ridiculous. 3 Quote Link to post

robwelsh 354
Probuks answer is quite honest and worth taking note tbh. Atleast with a pcp for hunting very little can go wrong, therefore giving a clean kill pretty much guaranteed. Having said that I also like spring guns..its tradition more than anything, plus being more rewarding Quote Link to post
barrywhite 282
001.txt I dont think a spring gun takes a long time to load a break barrel is seconds . Quote Link to post
Probuk 93
001.txt I dont think a spring gun takes a long time to load a break barrel is seconds . So in theory...you miss...you lift up the rifle...break the barrel...pick out a pellet...put it in the breach...lift the barrel...safty...aim...fire.??? Well the second you missed...id have reloaded and hopefully took my second shot and finnished the job. Lets not get all carried away...it's porsonal preferance Quote Link to post
Flow 18
In theory you don't miss, and if you think you might you don't take the shot. Not using a girls calibre also helps 1 Quote Link to post
