ABDog 0
None of mine will swim But I hope to sort that this summer Right now, I keep mine in condition with roadwork, WP, a-frame, flirt-pole and general craziness about the house..lol.. I have seen dogs that swim a lot that are very overweight. As with people, I guess the 'trick' is a combination of diet and exercise.. Something I want to do this year is run the dog alongside my pushbike... see what 5-10 miles of running every other day does for my dogs overall condition. Quote Link to post

scottish lurcher 185
to much musle will affected a dog running to bulky is no good thing need to be keep fit but there is saying to much is like not enough there comes a point when its fit then to much makes them slow again when i get my to its peak then i let them run on the field for 15min a day twice a day then rest is mouching around there kennel or walking about 5 miles to build stamina dont under estamate a good walk it builds stamina running ok but will not build up stamina like walking cos dog knacked before hes done any distance no use a dog running for 5 mins and it knacked needs to be able to mantain it speed for longer so better a 5 mile walk a day than a 15 min mad dash and walking helps your dog bond with you and gets him use to other sights and sounds sure other dog men might say other wise but try what suits your dog also depends age and type of dog and ground hes going to work before you no what kind of training you need to do Quote Link to post

Dont overdo the bike at first, you will wear their pads out a couple of miles a day will do i,up the pace gradually,I used to give mine about 6 miles a day, done in 5o mins ,but you really have to build it slowly. olly 0
I would suggest you find somewhere to ride where the dog is off the lead. I found out to my cost what happens when your happily riding along dog lead in hand and Peter rabbit decides to cross your path. Quote Link to post

I will second that Olly... we have used a bike for a few years now.. and my partner has the scares to prove it. There is no way I would do it anymore!! but my partner still does.. I saw this on another forum... http://www.dogpoweredscooter.com/ Quote Link to post
MikeTheDog 153
Not a good idea to run a dog behind/alongside a car imo Friend was checking fencing and his spaniel was running free, head down on a scent two wheels went over his head.. ..Dog survived and was fit and well after a couple of days!
