patterdalejoel 669
anything to do with inbreeding lads ?? all rabbits will be highly inbred and related, the romans will not of brought a lot over and there are millions here not so they will all be very inbred. and some isolated populations will never get new blood in them. munster man 118
my take on it (not very scientific)was that i only ever came across black rabbits in highly populated areas,so i put it down to inbreeding.iv learned something new today Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
they are a mutation, "agouti" is the officail name for normal brown rabbit fur colour, which is made up of hairs of various colours inc black. then a mutation occurs where one comes all black. all black ist to do with pet rabbits as they are completly black, but i think parti colours and other colours are to do with domestic rabbits Spot on. If you look at a rabbits fur, it has a lot of black hairs, and also orange/ginger hairs, and white hair, obviously. THe colored rabbits are a mutation, which has expressed itself in one dominant color. I have had black, white, ginger, grey and blue rabbits as well as ones with patches and one half white (front half) and rear half normal. You do also sometimes get escapees and inter breeding, and i've seen a kind of lion headed rabbit, and i think 'the ferreter' caught one as well. Edited to add - Munster man you are right in that you see it more in higher populations, but that is because the higher the population, the higher the chance of mutation and also a high popuation indicates that it is easier to survive and so mutations are less selected against in terms of breeding etc. Edited June 27, 2012 by Ideation 2 Quote Link to post
