Bosun11 537
Though i much prefer a run in the day, the majority of the dogs i've owned just couldn't catch 'em, it just excercises the hare! Plus, it's not the most sensible thing to do round these parts as everyone's on your case! Spinning 'em on the lamp my dogs catch a few, though not too many, a hare is a real bonus to the night. I find that local hares really know what the night game is all about and have watched some good, rapid dogs pushed to stop them. Elsware i've found them to be really green as far as lampin goes, hares really 'dazzled' by the beam. Funny thing i've noticed is that if a hare comes in off calling foxes an it's then run, seems to always be a catch at the end? Maybe thats just co-incedence but...? So, it's daytime for preference but lamp for practical. Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
Thanks for your honesty Bosun 11 Lets all have the truth here folks, no matter what you have, its all part of lurcher work, each to their own. Frank. Quote Link to post
alimac 882
I voted daytime. Ive lamped a lot of hares in the past with various lurcher types, including heavy boned collie crosses and I can honestly say the main reason I lamped them was because my dogs were not good enough to catch them during the day I just wish more people could be as honest about their dogs capabilities as if they were they would admit a hare during the day, in the wintertime takes a heck of a lot more stopping than one thats run at night. But this is the dog game were talking about and many people would rather tell you that the hares they run are supr fit, challenging night time sprinters, than admit they dont own anything good enough to stop em during the day when the odds are tipped more in the hares favour one of if not the truest post iv read on any forum, always had bull xs so if i was wanting to catch one it would have to be on the lamp, but better to watch in daylight though.. MATTI 34
A dog that can catch hare's on the lamp does not make it a hare dog, i have a bullx at moment that can catch them on the lamp but in the day-time he's left lacking, a pal of mine has salukix and sometime's they are made to look like monkey's by a good strong winter hare, in the daytime, which is when they should be tested not on the lamp. P.S. All this is pre-ban by the way. Quote Link to post

timmy k 592
i live right by altcar and as you can imagine its lamped heavily all yaer round by locals and non locals, as such the hares are so well edjucated to the lamp that they run just as well in the night as they do in the day, ive never owned hare dogs but they all killed hares occasionally and probaly killed as many hares locally in the day as in the night. but if you travel a couple of miles down the road to a less known place you can chase hares round and they will stay in which ever field they were put up in. so my opinion is both but i suppose it depends were your doing the coursing. leec 132
the better hare no doubt is daylight a lamp bred dog killing them at night is just as hard a test as a day bred dog killing them in january or febuary Quote Link to post
