2 new permissions gained in 24hrs, how?

Recommended Posts

Reading through THL forums, there are loads of threads, from people after their first permission, or further permissions, some who are new to the game, and others who are returning to the game.

As we all know it isnt easy, and every now and then "a little luck", a "little being in the right place at the right time", and a little "passing the time of day" with someone can all help (and I don't mean passing the time of day because you want to get something out of it, but a genuine interest with the person you are talking to.).

I thought I would explain on here, how I just gained 2 more permissions in one day, in the hope it will show newcomers how it can just fall right sometimes.

1. A few weeks ago, a mate asked if I could go around to see a farmer that he knew, who has a small, sheep and cattle farm on the edge of the moor, and try and get a fox that had been troublesome. When I spoke to him, he explained how he had a couple of people that shot on his land, but they were unable to help him on this occassion. I promised I would do my best, and later that evening I went back, called up the fox, a barren vixen, and shot it. I hadnt got the farmers number, so I phoned my mate and asked him to pass on the message.

At that time I didnt really think about going back to him, probably because he said he already had people shooting on his land.

Anyway, on Saturday, I was at the local school fete, with the kids, when I bumped into him, and he asked me about the fox, and thanked me for getting it. As we chatted about this and that, he said to me, " you know, I have a hell of a problem with geese (canadas) on the fields of grass, your more than welcome to come up anytime you want, they're a bloody nuisance, in fact, there is hundreds of pigeons up there, you are welcome to shoot those as well" :D :D :D

He then went on to explain, that the people who supposedly shoot his ground at the moment, hardly ever turn up, and are never getting much when they are there. Of course that was the signal to now jump in and gratefully take him up on his offer! :D

Over the years I have picked up several permissions as a result of shooters, not doing what is required by the landowner, and probably only getting their permission in the first place, to justify their fac/shotgun cert.

2. The second permission I picked up, was a bit of a smaller one, ideal for the BSA supersport, and is mainly jacks and feral pigeons. That one started of earlier on in the year, on some permission I dont do much shooting on, but I catch a few moles in return for a bit of ferreting. On the way up to the farm where I set the mole traps, I pass through another very small farm yard owned by an elderly gentleman and his wife who keep a handful of sheep. Almost every day when passing through, we stop to have a chat with him, and will occasionally catch the occassional mole in his garden. Not for any favour, just because they are a likeable couple.

On Sunday morning while checking a trap in his garden, he said, "what are you like at getting Jackdaws". I asked him if he meant in traps or shooting, and he replied "however you want!" :D

Bingo, another permission in 24 hours, only really suitable for the air rifle as its around his farm buildings and there are other residences nearby, but heyho, one permission dealt with correctly often leads to another, and it will be ideal for my eldest, as there is 100's of the comical little birds.

Now both of those permissions are within 5 mins walk from home, not quite as easy if you live in a town, but hopefully it has shown, as many already know, that go about things the right way, and you will get the permissions you want.

For any newcomers reading this, I hope it has been useful.

Nice one fella we all know how hard to is to get permission and even harder to keep! My friend I go shooting with has at his feet roughly 4,000 acres and doesn't do much with it at all it's shocking he keeps saying to me I can shoot there and there and there but he never bothers same old fields all the time? I cannot understand why anyone with that amount of land stays to the same old fields when he has all that at his disposal it's shocking I don't want to take anybody's permission away from them but the farmers we talk to keep telling him I've a problem with his and that etc and he's just not bothered I think I may have to ask if he doesn't mind could I go and sort a few of the farmers pest problems out for them and get talking to them and see what the outcome is

I get called quite a bit about rabbit shooting etc! Farmer just don't trust people with firearms these days! They even say would your company be interested in "paying" for my shooting rights? I always say "no. This is how I earn my living" Then the next day they ask if I would do it for free! "no" lol

I think its because with a professional company they feel you'll be more trustworthy etc!

Or maybe its just the area we operate in!

Some of the farmers have even offered to mentor people for the first couple of times shooting!

What has changed over the years? It never used to be like this?
