T42 44
Just handle them normally, not rough, think about how you would react if you were handled rough... you're asking for a bite. Just pick them up nice and easy, stretch them out, stroke em under the chin, do what ever you want just keep them happy. Get them comfortable to your scent and touch. The more you handle them the better they will be with you, obviously. They still might try an odd nip a couple of times but that's just part of them getting use to you. Just be patient. Don't expect miracles off them overnight they need time to settle in and get used to you. Yeah mine (and I bet most peoples) I can feed a small piece of meat the size of a tic tac from between my thumb and first finger and they will gently just take it. They'll eat anything out of the palm of my hand without biting. Don't be fooled into the mis conception that ferrets have to be nasty to be good workers. That's a load of pish. They will distinguish between work and home like you do. Trust me, when they get to know what going out in the carry box means they'll soon get going, then once you've done your sport they'll calm down and go sleep in the box, nice and calm when you fetch them back. You don't want ferrets that you can't handle or can't trust to pick up or show your family for fear of them biting. One of mine sliced my thumb open when I got her as a young one, don't think they had been handled that much as kits and they didn't know my hands. One of the most piercing pain ever as your finger tips are so sensitive, but now they are soft as a brush with me. If your own ferret does bite you then its your own fault for making the ferret feel the need to do it or you haven't spent enough time with them or your not treating them right in my opinion. Take it easy and good luck... T42. Quote Link to post
