JohnGalway 1,043
I'm going to give it a go, haven't a bulls notion how it'll turn out but I'm going to go looking for grass clippings to start me off (organic four legged lawnmowers take care of my grass), newspaper or cardboard will help too, throw in some seaweed maybe. jjbull 38
make sure the grass is well mixed with shredded cardboard or other twiggy stuff if not the clipping wil just turn slimy and smelly

Carraghs Gem 1,675
Grass, cardboard, nettles, dock leaves etc, waste veg and fruit from greengrocer, seaweed, chicken shit, horse manure, more lawn clippings, eggshells, teabags etc
Bootsha 1,306
Chicken shit, in moderate ammounts though mate, or it'll burn yer jibblets off, otherwise, all that needs to be said has already. If its organic, and will readily rot (not sure about leylandi hedge cuttings etc though) chuck it on the pile mate. B

iamduvern 62
Dont overdo the chicken shit and turn the pile over on a regular basis I have 4 lots on the go at anyone time and its kept in a frame made with old pallets so as it matures its moved along the line so I always have a usable heap

JohnGalway 1,043
How well/badly would a cheapie garden shredder (probably off Ebay, in or around €100) deal with newspaper/cardboard? The mind numbingly boring bit would be manually shredding the newspaper/cardboard.
craigyboy 1,274
sprinkle some active bran on your waste material mate,it doesnt half speed up the process,i swear you can see it working Edited June 25, 2012 by craigyboy
