out last night with the pup

Recommended Posts

Wind was blowing well last night so i said id get my pup(jess) out for a run on some young bunnies .its only her second night out and i noticed a big improvement .she is starting to follow the beam well now.after nearly a hour of searching our usual spots we hadnt even left the car the grass was too high in all the fields we checked .We decided to head for home thinking our night was going to be a waste. Not far from home we checked a spot where the silage had been cut the day previous.Shone the lamp in over the gate and seen two rabbits sitting out so we said we would give them a go.My mate was with me ,we gave his dog the first slip which he dispatched after a good course up and down the ditch.Jess was now looking very eager to get going so we hoped a ditch and entered the next field after a quick scan around i picked a rabbit sitting out ,knocked the lamp off and got a bit closer .Knocked it on again and made sure jess seen the rabbit, gave her the slip and off she went like a missile  ,she seems to have plenty of speed .Turned the rabbit a couple of times but after every turn was loosing ground through her inexperience and over eagerness overshooting the rabbit by 10 yards or so after every turn before quickly gaining ground again, eventually the rabbit evaded her by getting behind a mound of stone(edge of a quarry) after a bit of searching around the stone she returned back not looking impressed, plenty of praise and back on the slip.Lamp on again and another rabbit for my mates dog a little whippet cross alsation collie.Next was jess turn again picked another rabbit sitting out and off she went this time she picked him on the turn, well impressed .Feeling confident i picked another rabbit sitting out for her and after a good course the rabbit made it to the ditch, not giving up jess stood there with her ears twigged ,the rabbit made a fatal move and jess dispatched him.Heading back towards the car and home seen a 3quater grown grazer that thought it was safe to come back out,he was only a couple of yards from the ditch but i said id give jess a go,she covered the ground quick and turned him out the field and got her kill after a few jinks and turns. We ended up with 5 in the bag after about an hours lamping .We said we would call it a night at that and leave the pup finish on a high note. Not the finished artical yet but looking forward to the winter with her
