jigsaw 11,899
Now I've had a lot of experence with WILD goats, ive seen them taken with dogs lots of times and not too long ago either, ive shot a few in my time also, for anyone to say a goat is easy pickings makes me think they havent been at goats much or the goats their doing are TAME.My mate runs a big hairy mad wheaton on them and the billys dont half punish the dog some times.Ive seen this wheaton get his body chucked about a fair bit and then the billy drive his head hard and fast into the dog,the wheaton never so far shirked his duties and retalliated with the venom only a game dog has.I must admit though, once the initial steam runs out of the goat the dog takes over and submits the billy quickly, but to survive the initial attacks is the secret.I know of a good half dozen dogs that jacked up after a good hiding from the billys, this includes a pair of pit/greyhounds too.The goats taken here in IRELAND are big dirty smelly hairy b*****ds,they are really hefty animals and to drag them to a vehicle a few fields away are an impossibility by 1 person, deer in fact are much easier and lighter to move. The she goats are a different matter, they are easy pickings and no test for a good dog.I have to say i think a gun is a far better way to deal with them but sometimes the goats wander into areas that the use of a gun is not feasable,as JD said, its bloody hard fast running and graft to get to terms with the big herds but its good fun when its necessary to cull them. whin 463
over in new mexico they have wild goat herds and up the north of scotland and on there own terrain are a handfull for a dog , i saw a coyote hound pin a billy on some rough mesa he thrappled it and kept it down , now up north in scotland they are wild and at one time i would have thought my scottish anscetors would have killed goats with there old deerhound crosses , al in al if your out on the hill country you see them , there no were as dangerous as apig or havelina for a dog , lots of people keep goats in the desert regions as they thrive on what catle and sheep cant , so they stray get loose and are feral , ive got pics of alpine goats they are very big 30 or more inches to the shoulder they use them for packing when hiking etc great animals etc and sure footed , i know some english freinds who killed a few with big rifles bur all in all no better to eat than roe etc cheers Quote Link to post

jigsaw 11,899
lurchers really dont suit the terrain my mates hunt, mountany rough ground soon shatter the toes of the lurchers, plus they reckon too much speed is not a good thing.as ive mentioned the wheaten is proving to be a decent dog at the moment but their working lives are short lived due to the terrain and the nature of the hunt, the guys i have seen take goats never hang about too long, the killing of a goat with a dog would be a long drawn out cruel affair if left to proceed to the last breath of the goat.the guys run in and finish off the goat as is humanely possible.IL your some messer boy,lol Scent?Australlia?goat kids, lots about here in the emerald isle.the speed of the herd is amazing, they never seem to break into a gallop/fast run,but they seem to shuffle about but i spent 2 hrs running and stopping before we got on terms with them.good craic though.
