T J 0
Hello all. New to the forums ^^ Been browsing for a few months now but finally found a reason to sign up! Recently just been passed on my SGC with a conditional license until i get a cabinet sorted out. A long time ago when i first applied it was the idea to get a cabinet one way or another with next months pay cheque. Unfortunately, the missus lost her job in between applying and the next pay cheque leaving very little left in the pot at the end of the month as you can imagine. Last week the firearms officer came round and went through all the necessaries and OK the place i was going to install etc so now i'm just waiting on a cabinet! Luckily, i work in the HVAC industry and i've taken a back hander (naughty naughty) from one of our fabricators to knock me up a cabinet. The one expense we have agreed upon is that i supply the locks to him. I know they have to be to BS 7558 :1992 but the exact standard the locks need to meet is leaving a question mark. Is there a place you can get these from? Or a standard manufacture anyone can suggest? I've tried googling it but thought i would ask some of the expert opinions here before i part with cash (given the financial situation and all!) Any help is greatly apprecaited ^^ Thank You! Bunny Boiler 177
How many shotguns are you buying? One rough shotgun, (actually up to two is allowed) and you can use a gun cable. Places like Francis Lovell of Witney, Oxfordshire, sell them for about £40. The law does not say you have to have a cabinet for a shotgun, and cartridges must be stored somewhere "out of sight", so the "man draw" is acceptable. Also, the law says you must do your best to make it as secure as possible. Now, due to the fact that you've already said the best you can do is a cabinet, this may stop the option of a cable, but for anyone else reading, it's worth noting. The cable needs the same force to be removed as the cabinet (off the top of my head, I can't tell you the Newtons required, but I'll google it if needed). Also, What I am doing as I physically do not have wall space for 4 bolts on a cabinet, I am using a small piece of wall for a cable, then building a small plywood box around it with a lid and then padlocking that too for extra security. At the end of the day, if someone wanted to nick a £200 shotgun that is ancient, then they can crack on. If it was over a grand, I'd probably make more effort. (For anyone querying my information, ask yourself, how do people in caravans, where they have no external wall to bolt a cabinet, how do they store a shotgun legally?). Also, the locks themselves don't need to be anything special I don't think? There's no classification system for them. Any old locks will do, as long as it isn't a padlock. Something like this would do. And a bargain at under £25. http://www.lockmonst...CFcUmtAodEggOwA Hope this sheds some light, Atb, Bunny. Edited June 22, 2012 by Bunny Boiler Quote Link to post
T J 0
Thanks for the quick reply bunny! I'm likely to need space for 3 for now until the finances pick up. I did consider a cable, i live in a HMO and didn't want to take a chance with them rejecting it based on that. A cabinet is fine for what i'm looking for. Thanks for the link, i know they needed to be 7 lever or something like that and have two locks with different keys to them on your cabinet? Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
There are no set specifications that a cabinet "has" to be for a shotgun. Police tend to prefer a BS cabinet, but it's not essential, as long as the guns are secured to a similar standard. Remember though, that the conditions on your SGC make it your responsibility to ensure the security of the weapons at all times. Any decent deadlock will do the job. The ones on lockmonster would be fine. http://www.lockmonst...binet-lock.html and seem a decent price at £16 each. Edited to add, just found some much cheaper, £4.50 plus vat each! http://www.morganlocks.net/shop/product.php?id_product=107 Make sure you get him to make the box much bigger than you think you'll need. You WILL end up with more guns, it's inevitable. Probably an idea to get him to knock you up either a lockable top box or a separate lockable box too. You don't HAVE to lock your cartridges up, but it's not a bad idea, and at least you'll have the space available when you go for your FAC in a couple of years time.
