readie 184
readie if hes out every other day how many runs is he getting and are they runs he as a chance of catching as you stated when they hop and not run into a hedge he runs past if you lamp him pick and choose your runs so he has the best chance of catching a bit like a dog just starting of squatters or bunnys well out and walk up to them so he is almost on top before they get up and if you can get out more than a few hrs every other day i know its not always possible but more runs he gets the better im sure it will click thanks for that interesting read. DogMagic 461
Wind up for sure, 3 yrs old!!! some dog man!!! if your not happy with him now you'll never be mate. what a intelligent response, next time i put a thread up asking if anyone could possibly help, dont bother replying.as for others yes tried him lamping and with other experienced dogs,he just seems to like the chase then forget he should be catching them.last year when mixi was all over a permission i have he caught loads since then hes gone back to running flat out everywhere he goes. And now they dont have mixy there harder to catch and they can see where there going and the dogs over compensating for his failures and frustration. So hes throwing himself as fast as he can at um and when they disapear he doesnt notice, overshoots and loses um. Best thing to do is get out with the lamp mate and on a nice dark windy night and find him a few right out in the middle of a field, one thats got a long way to go to reach home. And walk in to it untill the dog has defo seen it then slip. 1 Quote Link to post

Millet 4,497
Personaly if it was my dog i would keep him on the slip where he has a good chance of chasing and failing..his confidence will be getting knocked if he is constantly chasing and missing bunnie's..and if you keep doing it i'm sure he will properly jack sooner or later and not even attempt to run them on that certain ground.. Give him a breather on the bunnies for now and wait for all the field's to get cut...he should be as keen as mustard by then and you will have a load of daft bunnies to lamp for him.. poacher3161 1,766
My own exspeirience from wat i have seen and owned some lurchers bred out of non ped whippets have no natrual running ability [bANNED TEXT] it comes to useing their brain to control their running style to predict the jinks and turns of a rabbit as has been said just give it easier runs and hope the penny drops. long dogs 580
Do you recall him after each run? Nothing worse than a dog that hunts on.try keeping him on slip and only slip it if you think it got a chance of getting it.try get few squatters for it atb Quote Link to post
beast 1,884
i wonder if you gave him a break for the summer then started again this autumn by taking him out with the ferrets, if you use nets at least you can guarantee he will get his mouth round something and help his confidence. a bit like starting with a pup and build up from there Quote Link to post
